| 4.0 excellent | AlexTM510 | April 8th 10 | Everyone seems so upset of the new mellow direction this album has taken-because that begs me to ask what does "progressive" music mean? Of course the term is vague but The Ocean-still embracing their classical composition roots go for a softer more classical approach that takes more nods to Radiohead/New Thrice then to their post-metal contemporaries. This is still the same epic multi-layered Ocean as we know-just much more subdued/softer/and pretty-and if you can get past that you'll see this stands just as strong as their older material. Overall an excellent progression for the band that in the long run will stand as 2010 album contender.

| 4.5 superb | Lybrium | April 13th 10 | For anyone who is still listening at this point, I have enjoyed The Ocean Collective's releases since Fogdiver, Aeolian remains my favorite. Everything overwhelmingly negative said about this release is purely opinion and taste oriented, in the sense that, this album is well produced but not over-produced, features expert instrumentation and vocal delivery, (Loic has an unconventional, raw style of producing more contemporary harmonies, leading to pigeon-holing of his "skillz") and is startlingly different, while always managing to almost sound like The Ocean Collective. This album is not a follow up to Precambrian, and it's not the heaviest thing in the record shop anymore, but thats not what keeps most Ocean fans coming back, It's the layers, the clever structuring, the dynamics, this album has all that, you just might have to put all pretense aside to fully enjoy it. 4/5

| 3.0 good | NeutralThunder12 | April 10th 10 | I'm between a 3 and a 3.5 on this record; did I expect this to top "Precambrian"? Absolutely not. However, I expected
this to be a little better than it is. Honestly, while still a very solid record, with a few shining moments of genius, this
album has it's flaws. One, like most other albums from The Ocean, inconsistency annoyed me. Some tracks are
excellent, and contain some of the best vocal melodies from this band, while other tracks, were either mind
numbingly boring, or to repetitive. Another problem with this album is the lack of diversity among the song types.
Sure, the arrangements are varied, but there are too many songs that sound just like another on the album, too
close for comfort. So why a 3? Why is this still a good record. Well, despite being a tad boring, the record, in most
circumstances, is still beautifully arranged. The few standouts here REALLY stand out; the use of piano and strings
sets them aside from any band in the genre, and they use these instruments to their advantage (usually), and one
cannot ignore this and simply give the album a 2. Even if an album drags, and is boring, and can be a tad dull, when
it's arranged and crafted like this, it can never simply be a terrible effort. Despite being disappointed, despite the
lack in song variety, despite the major inconsistency among the quality of songs, "Heliocentric" is too unique,
original and well composed to not be a good record.

| 4.0 excellent | Alex Newton | May 9th 10 | The last two songs make up for the lack of creative punch on the rest of the album in a massive way. Firmament has some great moments too. Worth checking out if you're into progressive metal.

| 3.0 good | InFiction | April 8th 10 | Only a first listen but I am very impressed. New vocals are different albeit very powerful. In my opinion, we have here a strong contender for best metal album of 2010.

| 2.5 average | Wolfe | April 10th 10 | A different style not really welcomed by those familiar with The Ocean's previous works. Apparently more mellow and clean vocals are bad? Not exactly. Heliocentric could've been much better if it was more interesting, inspired, consistent, and less cheesy in the lyrics, guitar and drum work, etc. The direction of a more jazz and classical sound is good, but the band just needs to ante up on the metal.

| 3.5 great | rid | April 8th 10 | No matter how different this may be, it does not deserve 2 points from anyone just because it's not what people were expecting. Different does not = Bad. I quite like some songs, I'm sure the rest will grow on me and will be nice to listen to in between Fluxion and Aeolian.

| 3.5 great | ThePalestMexican | April 8th 10 | First listen was a pleasant experience, still has alot of Atmosphere, and Grace, while still retaining the heaviness. New vocalist is very different from the last, so disagreements are to be expected. However if you don't mind a more progressive version of The Ocean, then Heliocentric.

| 3.5 great | Burn2Burn | April 8th 10 | The Origin of Species still gives me hope that Anthropocentric will rule, but for now, this album is a big let down. A little less shitty clean vocals, a little more br00tal next time plz.

| 3.2 good | Erwann S. EMERITUS | July 30th 19 | So yeah it's more delicate than other releases, but the clean vocals are not astounding and are too much present. The band also pound much less than on other releases (lookin'atcha, Phanerozoic). Overall a good listen, but there's much better prog/post-metal (and better The Ocean too) out there.

| 4.0 excellent | Tibi | January 8th 19 | Initially rated this album lower, but it grew on me. This one is good as background music while doing work, but you really need to take some free time with some noise cancelling headphones and dig into it...then you will start to appreciate it. Firmament, The Origin of Species and The Origin of God are mind blowing songs.

| 3.5 great | resident sputbirb with fancy hat | November 10th 18 | I was always a big fan of loic's vocals, he
always seems to put all his heart into a
performance. It should be no suprise then that
i also love the vocals on this album,
especially on metaphysics and epiphany but
ptolemy also builds up beautifully. My biggest
gripe with this album however is the
production which leans to the side of
"natural" recording a bit too much which makes
the album sound very muddled at times. The
riffs also dont seem to be as effective and
varied as they are on most of the other the
ocean releases. Still, this is a fairly
interesting concept album and a fascinating
listen from start to finish.

| 3.5 great | sjp55555 | March 1st 13 | This album is not nearly as bad as some of the reviews. Yes big change in style from Precambian but songs like Firnament, First Commandment, Metaphysics, Swallowed by the earth are all really really good.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Isaacbean | May 11th 11 | A much more "jamable" album than their other stuff. Metaphysics and Epiphany are just amazing.

| 3.5 great | MasBarHigeuoris21 | February 15th 11 | Let me first say that my opinion might be a little bit biased because the first The Ocean album I listened to was Anthroprocentric, which is awesome in its own right. With that being said, I have yet to hear the angry, pissed off The Ocean that can be heard on the first few albums. I'm working my way back through their discography so after listening to Anthroprocentric this did not sound as bad as everybody said it is. Granted, this is even way different from Anthroprocentric and some of the songs just fucking suck, the album is still highly enjoyable. It might take at least 4-5 listens before it grows on you, but it is worth it. Ptolemy Was Wrong and Epiphany suck donkey dick and some of the lyrics on Swallowed by the Earth are laughable but the rest of the album is good to go. Maybe my opinion will change once I listen to the great Precambrian and the brutal Aeolian, but only time will tell. Until then, this album is pretty damn good.

| 3.0 good | Dodenakker | January 2nd 11 | It's definitely not a great album, but not a bad one either. The opening and closing songs are very solid. But the whole middle section is not so good. Shame though, it definitely had potential.
Bump |
| 0.0 | Xenophanes EMERITUS | April 9th 10 | Some of it works, some of it doesn't. Some parts are laughably cheesey while other parts are simply awesome. In the end, the album lacks consistency. Precambrian puts this to shame.
Bump |
| 3.5 great | Scoot | April 8th 10 | Not as good as some of their older stuff. The vocals are a bit awkward at times. Still, worth a listen.
Bump |
| 0.0 | jasonslfl | April 8th 10 | The instrumentation is just as good as it was on the Proterozoic half of Precambrian, but the new vocalist brings literally every song he sings on down by a solid 2 out of 5. Not only is his voice terrible, he doesn't meld with the direction of the music at all. I would rate this lower, but his screams aren't half-bad and I'm hoping Anthropocentric will somehow redeem it.
