I never got into these lads' indie pop, and this overdramatic yet dull record will not change that. They manage to make catchy muzak hollow.

Modern Vampires is probably always going to be their peak for me, but this is delightful. A great release AND it pisses off Sputnik's resident edgelord who couldn't get a real job reviewing music. Wins all around.

Sonically as well as creatively, this is a masterful achievement, absolutely no doubt here. But for my personal taste and the music I currently mostly listen to and enjoy, Only God Was Above Us just features too many twirls and squiggles. A single song includes approximately ten different ideas and that is not needed for an indie record imho, not even if you're suddenly Bjork-levels of avantgarde now. Still big respect for these guys. At least they have the balls to reach for the stars.

"Only God Was Above Us" begins with a quiet and resigned "Fuck the world" and ends with a ragged declaration of hope that the human spirit will outlive all of civilisation's institutions. In between you've got anti-capitalist dogma backed by fitful, cracked and delightfully absurd music ranging from indie heart-howlers and baroque carnival ditties. Vampire Weekend dare to look pretentious, super-serious and open-hearted on this album and for that I dip my lid to them. Best songs: 'Connect', 'The Surfer', 'Pravda', 'Hope'

"Only God Was Above Us" unabashedly embodies the quintessential Vampire Weekend style, which may prove challenging for those, like myself, who aren't particularly fond of their exaggerated indie aesthetic. Despite this, the album does offer some striking moments, such as the progressive pop energy of "Connect" or the exquisite beauty of "Pravda". However, I find it difficult to fully immerse myself in "Only God Was Above Us" from start to finish.

ONLY GOD WAS ABOVE US, brings a sprawling array of emotions with creative arrangements that journey through the sights, sounds, and culture of their old city, from their perspective. The exploration of NYC feels jaunty and melancholic, but feels hopeful by the end. Another excellent record from the band, but, to me, it might be my favorite.
