Leaving Man of the Woods in the dust, JT finally comes back to the heights of The 2020 Experience. A sexy, laid-back, and surprisingly self-aware record dealing with regret and mistakes regarding women. The oldest topic in the book, I know, but at least he shows some sense of repentance, which takes balls and is appreciated. He's still got the vocal chops of a generation and in the tracks where he isn't using autotune to pander to the modernity of the radio scene, he shows them big time. Kudos Justin, you crazy bastard - you turned it around.

Alright here's the thing: It's better than Man of the Woods by a longshot but that's not really
saying much. The pervading issue is how bloated this is and how inconsistent it is. You may have a
couple solid, sensual tracks in a row and then get a total stinker. The first single, the track
featuring NSYNC (Ha) and Sanctified are easily the best tracks here. Some serious trimming of fat
would be necessary to make this a palatable listen for me.

I'm realizing the same rating I'm giving this one is the same I gave 2018's "Man of the Woods". In retrospect, that should probably be a 2, though I stand by my rating of that one thanks to a few songs that have held up today (most haven't). Moving on, 2024's "Everything I Thought I Was" shifts to another producer to handle the instrumentation and mixing this time around with better results but still can't stick the landing. Perhaps "The 20/20 Experience" was too good; mainstreaming 'progressive pop' with nearly every track working is a tough act to follow up let alone striving for any form of reinvention. 'Drown' on "Everything I Thought I Was" feels like it wants to emulate 'Mirrors' - it gets close, but doesn't hit the mark. 'No Angels' sounds like something from "Future Sex", yet doesn't hit the mark. Even 'Paradise', which has a strange choice in featuring (?????) *NSYNC, sounds like something the group would've had as a B-side or something, yet doesn't hit the mark. Speaking of 'Paradise', it's confusing that Timberlake would opt to make a solo record instead of riding the nostalgia train and just cranking out a new record with *NSYNC - given 'Better Place' was a good start, there feels like there's more ripe opportunity there instead of this album - an ultimate harmless listen, better than "Man of the Woods", yet doesn't hit the mark.

Surface, but better than Man in the Woods in every way. The grooves do hit (most of the time); some noticeable tracks could?ve been cut and the better tracks could?ve had the 2 to 3 minute outros like in the 20/20. It?s a mix bag also when it comes to his delivery of some of his lyrics that pale in comparison to his older material (in terms of how he sells sexy). To me, this was enjoyable enough; but, I wanted something more thought out and interesting. There are so many artists who take this approach and have improved on it. JT still lives in the world he wants to live in.

You have a near perfect pop record if you cut 3-4 tracks. As it stands, this is a fun albeit bloated return to form.
