3.0 good | PistolPete | April 8th 24 | Commendable 80s synthpop but I just can never shake the feeling that this artist is trying way too hard

3.2 good | Erwann S. STAFF | March 6th 24 | 80s revival still going strong: this is synthpop with coldwavey and hi-NRG influences that help each song feature at least a couple of cool moments, but that style isn't carrying strong enough songs for the whole album to be as enjoyable as it could have been.

0.0 | TrantaLocked | March 2nd 24 | The linear path of music production evolution is close to exhausted and we're now upon the age of extreme aesthetic experimentation in pop music. It's very exciting because there's a lot of innovation that can be done with different combinations of throwback, lo-fi, avant garde and modern production styles. The late 00's brought the first 80's revival moment with Pop EDM albums like The Fame and The E.N.D., but still with a modern production that fell in line with the aforementioned linear path. That's unlike what is being seen lately in music and with this album, which brings a different kind of 80's revival in a form that actually sounds like (for the most part) it could be from the 80's, but with subtle modern improvements in some of the synths and vocal recording, and of course performed by a talented artist. I expect things to get even more lo-fi, more throwbacky and more weird.
Goated album

2.5 average | ajcollins15 | February 29th 24 | The latest album from synthpop and alt-pop sensation Allie X marks a significant departure from her previously playful and straightforward sound, embracing a harsher and more brash style of synthpop influenced by genres like post-punk (such as coldwave) and industrial-infused EDM (like Hi-NRG). "Girl With No Face" presents a dance-pop and synthpop experience that feels reminiscent of stepping into a gothic nightclub. Each track exudes a haunting edge, cultivating a nocturnal and nihilistic atmosphere. While many listeners are captivated by the album's intensity, I personally find it stylistically stagnant, lacking the depth and darkness I believe it could have explored further. There's a persistent feeling that Allie X could have pushed this style to much greater and darker depths.
