About as middle of the road of artsy rock/post-punk as it gets. Outside of 'Dancer' and 'Gift Horse' there really isn't much here that evokes the raw emotion and catchiness that IDLES was so good at providing previously. TANGK feels like a band running out of ideas that met with a fancy new producer to pivot direction and is just hanging on by a thread. Bands should and can successfully change their style but here it just leads to a very mediocre record end to end.

Idles' sentiment is beautiful, but their newest is an unfortunate crossroads of questionable writing and flat, unfulfilling production. Every cathartic moment, crescendo, chorus all feel undersold by the lack of any discernible depth of sound, instead ending up rather dry and frustrating to hear. When its explosion of emotion does however occur, the result is magnetic. But certainly the most inconsistent record in Idles' catalogue.

I can perceive the vision that IDLES intends for their new sonic direction. The UK-based post-punk and noise rock ensemble has witnessed their recent releases evolve into a more mainstream-friendly sound, a departure from their earlier work like "Brutalism" in 2017, leading to the somewhat shallow "Crawler" in 2021. With the emergence and advancements in crank wave, the band appears eager to infuse their sound with more alternative vibes, as evident in their latest album "TANGK." This album predominantly features alternative rock undertones intertwined with elements of art punk and dance-punk. Overall, the album feels as hit or miss as their last two releases. While standout tracks like "Gift Horse" and "Dancer" (leaning more towards dance-punk) impress, others such as "A Gospel" and "Jungle" leave me perplexed, questioning how they made it through the initial edits of the album.

TANGK is an album that contains an anger that never explodes, and a tension that is never released. That?s highly unfortunate, because IDLES is a band that needs to release the tension they create. Really mwerf record.
