2.5 average | raggedragamuffin | November 9th 11 | Loooooved The Tryptich. Very appealing to the angry Christian in me at the time. Storm the Gates of Hell saw me lose a little of that enthusiasm, but I'll be damned if going to a couple of their shows didn't bring it all back! But I don't know if it's me, no longer a Christian, no longer as angry, or no longer as into the genre, or the music, but this album didn't do anything for me. Nothing different, nothing special, just bland. I was 99% putting the blame on me, but then I listened to "Undying" and "Ribcage", and yep, those tracks still slay. And if it's not me, then...

3.0 good | heyadam | March 25th 10 | At first, I thought it was really good because I was kind've worried that it would've been awful, like Killswitch's second self titled one, but it was actually good. I changed the rating because I've given it 3 or 4 listens since then and have noticed some generic song writing. Still a good band, just not their best record

0.0 | K. Prince | March 6th 10 | With their fifth effort The World Is a Thorn, Demon Hunter churn out yet another collection of blandness that will titillate the nostalgic few who enjoyed the band's earlier work, but deter any onlookers away with its inconsistent songwriting, terrible harsh vocals and surplus of
mediocrity.

1.5 very poor | PABLO PICASSO NUMERO UNO | June 10th 22 | this is one of the most confused albums ever. a new rhythm guitarist who well knows metals tropes pretty much takes over the album and indeed turns them into a kind of melodic thrash or thrashcore with the typical nude muddly elements, and yet this is their worst thus far. just wtf are lifewar, line, and nails, collapsing being a decent nu track and title modern thrash, but then it just gets fucking weird. just...breathe? shallow water? feel...as tho...u could...wtf are these song titles and confused ass rhythm thrash with autotuned vox and disjunctured 'hooks'. by far the worst part of all this is ryan clarks vox, like wtf are u even doing, terrible singing and mid grunts with autotune fucking everywhere

3.5 great | Lichtmensch | December 28th 21 | Seriously confused by the ratings on this album. Far from their most formulaic, this album is also one of their most aggressive and diverse offerings.

2.0 poor | savaah | April 4th 14 | Well, demons must be captured so they can be tortured until their death. It's tricky cause they are spiritual beings, so you would have to use that machine from Ghostbusters.

0.0 | Scamp4553 | March 18th 14 | The World Is A Thorn is a step-up technically from Demon Hunter's previous album, featuring more guitar solos and blistering metal riffs, even though not nearly as memorable.

0.0 | Camstr | March 28th 12 | This album was a grower for me. There are a lot of new sounds and ideas to get used to on this release. But once I did, I really appreciated this album for what it was and still is: Demon Hunter's most unique release so far.

0.0 | macadoolahicky | March 25th 12 | This band must honestly have some sort of formula written down that they use each time they shit out an album. The World Is A Thorn has a few good hits on it, such as album opener "Descending Upon Us," "LifeWar," and the crushing title track. Otherwise, The World Is A Thorn is yet again just another Demon Hunter album.

3.5 great | PandaLuke | January 27th 11 | The second half of the album is really what pushes this up to a 3.5 for me. The whole thing is insanely catchy. Fo' real, I find myself singing these choruses around the house, even when I haven't listened to it in a while. I really like what the new guitarist did with this. It seems a lot more original than Don's work on previous records. And I gotta say something about the production. Dang, it's amazing. This album sounds amazing! I also think that they make some great use of electronic elements throughout, which they didn't utilize too much on the first three albums. Not the greatest thing ever, but pretty good album, if you ask me.

4.5 superb | Hwhathuphbuttercup | June 1st 10 | This is by far Demon Hunter's best: Lets look at the facts children. 1- Ryan Clark continues to improve with every album. This is his best performance, both screaming and clean. He increases the range and power of his scream, and his clean vocals are much more clear and confident (a trend that started with The Triptych). 2- The new guitarists, with all respect to ex-guitarists Don Clark and Ethan Luck, are much stronger, and don't simply play power chord after power chord. Patrick Judge is a much more natural, souldful soloist then Ethan, whereas Ethan's solos sounded forced and awkward. Ryan Helm also writes stronger, more technically advanced riffs then Don Clark did. 3- The songwriting is perfectly consistent. There is no weak song on this album, and each song has multiple sections; a new feat for Demon Hunter. Beforehand, Demon Hunter had done the verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus deal. This album still does that occasionally, but throws in different sections, including plenty of sections you'll never hear again. There are guitar solos in half of the songs, and they're all well placed. And for those who say that Lifewar is a terrible song, its actually the outro for 'Descending Upon Us'. So, you can't judge it based on a single song merit. Overall impression? TWIAT is DH's best album. Ryan Clark has improved on his already phenomenal vocals. The songs are much more technical and heavy metal oriented, but never lose the hooks that made Demon Hunter as popular as they are. The guitar solos are actually well done, well placed, and soulful. Its also their first album to not have a weak song. Final words? Don't be afraid of change kiddies. This suits Demon Hunter now and in the long run.

3.0 good | Darkhyperchaos | May 31st 10 | This is still enjoyable Demon Hunter, but it really falls short of their earlier releases, most notably Summer Of Darkness. The whole direction of The World Is A Thorn really doesn't work too well. Demon Hunter tried to make it heavier, faster, more aggressive, and more technical, and sure, it in some ways succeeds to do all of those things, but it sounds forced and it sounds like Demon Hunter is trying to be something they're not. They had a killer distinct sound on all of their albums before Storm The Gates Of Hell, now they've completely ruined that sound all for the sake of being "heavier". There's quite a bit of forgettable songs, and all of the ballads are shockingly weak. This isn't a terrible album, but they completely messed up their sound, and this is far from their best work.

2.5 average | wyankeif1337 | March 6th 10 | I liked this at first, then I realized how painfully mediocre this was. It doesn't even have a good DH ballad, like their first 3 albums did. The title track slays, though.
