Holy shit this band stepped their game up. I always considered them a lesser blood incantation but damn this just flipped the tables.

I've always liked Tomb Mold, but to me they always lacked emotional weight in their riffing and general delivery. This album is a huge improvement on that front. The riffs are more emotional, proggy and melodic while still bringing plenty of their trademark cavernous brutality to the table.

there's this odd muffling sound on the drums that makes the snare have this clompy snap to it that sounds both slightly sloppy and also too loud in the mix. I don't like it and it just really grates on me the whole record. Otherwise this is fine proggy death metal. I don't mind them trying to go more Blood Incantation-y and also do the "what if heavy osdm was also prog" thing, but the aforementioned mixing (why are the guitars so low compared to the drums?) leaves something to be desired.

Ironically only saw the soundoff about flipping the tables with Blood Incantation but I feel the exact opposite. While 'The Enduring Spirit' is a great, proggier side of Tomb Mold that approach to a proggier sound has their songs lacking a bit of direction compared to in the past even if they still write some of the better tech death metal riffs of recent memory. Sometimes it feels like the proggy, instrumental sections are just tossed in without as much care as someone like Blood Incantation and the record kind of just meanders along at times.

The riffs on the first half of the album are only bested by Faceless Burial for quality and raw enthusiasm. But as the record goes on, the quantity of Cynic-al New Age ambience and less engaging riffs increases.

This hits the Goldilocks zone for me in terms of melody versus abrasiveness. Moving away from OSDM, Tomb Mold explores some very progressive ideas in this release featuring some jazzy riffs and moments with a clean guitar tone. Don't get too comfortable though, because this is very much still a death metal record and those soft moments are always ambushed by crushing riffs and stampeding drums. These are accompanied by very deep and deathly gutturals which I do not find to be particularly clear. They serve their purpose though.

a couple examples of how to deathprog if youre going to do deathprog like memory and whispers, symbolic but still actual death metal, prog sections not lasting too long or matching/complimenting the dm beat, but then they decide they want to be boring and its all downhill watery dm or straight prog bleh

DM band goes prog while still retaining some of its OSDM spices, and while some of these softones are beautiful, the technical riffs aren't gripping enough for the whole lot to fully land its duality.
