Controversy aside, this is probably the first Doja Cat project with no skips for me. It's her most purely hip-hop project so far that feels indebted to stuff like Baby Keem and Ice Spice as much as other stuff feels indebted to The LOX and Eminem. A bit repetitive at times, but fun all around, truly feels like she's found her identity & isn't fucking around no more.

Her best one yet. Doja Cat delivers a record that opens up with her traditional pop rap'n'b shenanigans, before getting on some boom bap beats on the second half - these still retain her R&B hooks, fortunately. She just needs to get rid of the brash rage shizzle that quickly gets old.

The highs on this record are incredible, but the amount of filler drastically takes away from what could?ve been an amazing project. The productions lacks variation, and a lot of her lyrics feel repeated or bland. What this record makes clear is she has one of the most impeccable ears for hooks in the modern pop rap era, and can write mean bars as well, but for a project where she wanted to prove herself as a rapper one feels like more thought and process could?ve gone into such a ?slap back? album.

Doja Cat uses her voice to make pop/R&B/trap songs about sex - sex! - why do we listen to them? Or, to cut straight to the still-burning sex-posi question, are these songs just shallow thrills or are they part of a meaningful platform directed at people looking for something deeper? Is this face-value smut, or are we privy to a woman?s performative self-realisation in the lewd terms of her choosing? Does it bang? Are bangers ever just bangers? Is sex ever just sex? Wel- err, yes - no - sometimes? To all the above.
