| 3.5 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | August 26th 24 | Jagist Jazza lose some of their immediacy but none of their technical proficiency on One-Armed Bandit. The focus is more on proggy jazz-rock than on post-rocky nu jazz, which ain't bad per se, but not as enthralling as their magnum opus What We Must.

| 4.0 excellent | bodiesinflight57 | March 27th 11 | nowhere near as good as What We Must but this has actually really grown on me. At first I was hovering around the 3-3.5 mark but now it's a solid 4. rmultiple listens are rewarded.

| 2.5 average | zen5729 | February 26th 10 | Jaga Jazzist's fourth Ninja Tune release, and first in nearly five years, One-Armed Bandit is a great example of indulgent song-lengths and displays of technical skill hampering an album's potential. While there are interesting moments like the title track and the multifaceted (and relatively short) "Prognissekongen", songs like "Toccata" seem drone on endlessly, blunting their impact. These Norwegians have proven that jazzy post-rock (or whatever you choose to call it) can be thoroughly engaging, but much of this release is simply too easy to tune out.

| 4.0 excellent | Aids | January 28th 10 | How can a band possibly hope to follow an album as hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing as
their 2005 release What We Must? Quite frankly, anything other than a
"disappointment" would be a very pleasant surprise.
So, while One-Armed Bandit lacks some of the ingenious flow and spontaneity of their
masterpiece, the staggering musicianship and thoughtful song-crafting techniques found here
are still stunning. This is a gripping listen with constantly shifting dynamics. And while
it's true that this can certainly be a challenging listen at times, when that's the worst
you can say about it, you know you've found something exceptional; and that's what this
record, and this band, are.
