Wayfarer have applied their former decent-ish song-writing skill onto a newfound infatuation with all things Wild West. This bore a theoretically brilliant fusion into life that, however, like their previous album, falls flat on actually combining the ideas into one. There is the decent black metal and then the decent Western influence. They sort of live in the same world, but they never quite merge. And on 'American Gothic' this inability to combine the ideas successfully is even more glaring than on 'Romance with Violence'. Albeit it still is a pretty good black metal release, the promise of twangy leather boot aesthetic is largely non-existent or detached.

yo this new Panopticon album is pretty cool lol. Now that's American Black Metal, with country nods nicely being fused in a mostly post-metal discharge with occasional bm tropes - the last track masterfully captures the balance between these three aesthetics.

This is what I was expecting to hear the first time I listened to this band around the time World?s Blood came out and people were calling it wild west black metal. Liked that album, thought A Romance with Violence was okay, but this one takes the cake and it is barely even black metal at all.

More mid-paced than A Romance With Violence overall, but manages to perfectly capture that blackened western sound while retaining some compositional variety! Instant classic!

It ultimately leans on countryfied post metal more than black metal this time (trve blackened country perhaps?), but American Gothic is a satisfying followup to Romance With Violence.
