I think it is physically impossible for Billy Woods to miss, and he?s at his best with Segal. Slightly less dark and more ?traditional? than last year?s records, but equally poignant and potent.

Billy Woods has to be the sneakiest best artist out there right now. 'Maps' on the whole is an album you can just straight chill out to but at the same time when you take a deeper look at the Kenny Segal production and mixing, it really becomes a lot more complex than the chill mood it exudes. This record sounds good anywhere you listen to it but god damn does it just, sound good. Everything from the beats to the samples to the instrumentals and vocals just feels so precisely and thoughtfully placed. Billy Woods deliberate delivery really matches the mood that Kenny produces and if Mr. Woods rapped for an entire album about cooking and food no one would complain in the least. It is fantastic to listen to tracks like 'Kendwood Speakers' and 'Soundcheck' and then go to 'Bad Dreams are Only Dreams' or 'NYC Tapwater. The first two give off East Coast boom bap vibes and the latter feel more like you are in a film noir than a rap record. There are a lot of good songs here.

The second album from the underground MC Billy Woods and producer Kenny Segal sees a continuation of their jazzy and eclectic rap sound. For most of my reviewing career thus far I?ve never been a big Billy Woods fan because he can come off as very stale. However, on his newest album, maybe I finally understand the true appeal of his unique blend of left-field hip hop. There are so many memorable bars, features, and instrumentals that I will continue to keep coming back to months after this release. The only downside I have is that several times the instrumentals can?t get a bit stale as well as very heavy and poetic. Lyricism can cause Billy Woods to constantly stumble through many of the progressions, leaving a lot of awkward pauses, and cadence switches.

Consistent mf being consistent. Both Woods and Segal have made a mission to deliver gritty yet soulful abstract rap, and that's exactly what they do here.

Initially gave it a 4. On having the album grow on me I gave it a bit more. Any other artist might have gotten a 5 but this is the man who made Aethiopes and Hiding Places. Gotta mark the difference somehow, man.
