With We Are The Void, the concrete sound which Dark Tranquillity have kept since 2000's Haven begins to show slight cracks. While the toss-ups include a slew of guitar solos which are rather out-of-character for DT, they work in favor of keeping things different than what fans are used to. Also, the wonderful screams add a heap of emotion and the improved clean vocals of Stanne work wonders the few times they are implemented, and compliment the more depressed atmosphere with gratifying precision. Songs like the diverse and satisfying "Iridium" show just how much DT have experimented with their songwriting, often to great effect.
However, the opposite end of the spectrum poses a number of issues which DT have had lingering for quite some time, but always kept at bay with interesting riffs and solid musicianship and songwriting. The overbearing use of Martin Brandstrom's keys work wonders in some tracks, yet bore the listener to tears or even irritate in others. It goes without saying that the vast majority of the "melodic" part of their melodic death metal sound emanates from the synth, while the guitars concentrate on heavy chords to keep rhythm or provide rather interesting guitar solos, only periodically emerging to the forefront as the driving force of the music. The work of Henriksson and Sundin is vastly underwhelming, as the riffs of such tracks as "Lost To Apathy" or "Monochromatic Stains" are devoid from the album (let's not get into comparing the riffs here with the ones put forth on The Gallery, because I can assure you I will break into tears). Overall, though, this is another good DT release, nothing more, nothing less.

We Are the Void is Dark Tranquillity's weakest album since Haven. That said it's pretty solid, but it has very little
sense of identity or originality at all. The album does get stronger as it progresses however, with the last 3 songs
being the strongest on the album. It's very much keyboard-oriented as another user said, but there are still a few
crunchy Character-esque riffs thrown in the mix. All in all it's a very solid release, don't expect to be blown away but
don't expect to be disgusted either. It's enjoyable, and that's all you can ask for really. A little variation would be nice
however.

Album is not as bad as people are making it seem. Definitely isn't the band's strongest but I enjoyed it.

Underrated album and a bit of a grower. It is like a darker, more stripped down cousin of Fiction, which I think is a good thing because I find Fiction to be borderline corny at times. Lovers of guitar riffs might be disappointed that this is more keyboard oriented than their previous releases. Personally I don't care which instruments carry the melody as long as I enjoy the melody. I love the atmosphere and production on this!

I rather enjoy this midpoint between Fiction and Construct; we get enough of the grizzling guitar work characteristic of the former with hints at the wonderfully melodic keys and atmosphere from the latter. Truth be told, I find it more compelling than its successors.

I'm a long time DT fan, and, after the excellent Character, I was severely disappointed by Fiction which for me sounded formulaic, uninspired and "trying too hard". However, I think Into The Void is a fantastic album and, in my opinion, a welcome return to form. For me it's a blend of the kind of sounds of Projector and Haven but with an original twist. I'm surprised they are releasing Shadow In Our Blood as a single (it's far from the strongest song), the single should be Surface The Infinite in my opinion. Anyway, I think overall this is a great album!

Amongst a slue of disappointing, yet highly anticipated metal releases within the last few months, Dark Tranquillity’s We Are the Void seems to tower above the rest (at least for the time being). The veteran melodic death metallers have crafted a better record than predecessor Fiction, using an approach that resembles a culmination of the band’s various stages throughout their career. There is no doubt that this record puts forth a greater focus on keys than some fans may be used to, but they work so well with the dark and gloomy DT riffs it’s almost hard to imagine the band without them. This is far from a perfect record or even amongst the band’s better outings, but it’s definitely a big step in the right direction, and shows that they’re not too set in their ways to experiment a bit without ruining their sound.
