Ihsahn is back...and a little strange. In the Emperor frontman's third solo album, he shows he's still musically relevant albeit a little odd. His screaming has consistently gotten worse with each album, but his clean singing is improving noticeably. He's been experimenting with different guitar playing styles, and even brought in a saxophone, the saxophone sounding quite nice in many parts of the album, and in others it sounding completely ridiculous. There are no standout tracks like there were on The Adversary or angL, which may disappoint fans of Ihsahn's first two. Overall a very well-thought out album, but with no real lasting effect.

I prefer this kind of modern prog, mayyyybe because there's black metal and bm is cool. While I found some moments to be typical epic prog parts - thus not very interesting tbh - there are some interesting stuff happening here, from the cool sax to the sometimes extreme dynamic changes. It's not always to my taste, but it's a solid prog metal record that tries to go *a bit* further.

This would be a four if it wasn't for the last four songs being a bit dragging. The saxophone parts on One The Shores where it was just the saxophone being shown didn't really fit in with the song nor did it play in with a melody so it got a bit boring and irritating. The first four songs are really fucking good.

Such rich textures, such deep atmosphere and yet powerful and punctuated - this is a post-metal masterpiece. The progressive elements - saxophone! - are ideally interwoven with big slabs of riff-work and poignant melancholic interludes, all held together with the distinctive voice of the creator, which displays a curious similarity between the haunting choruses and gut-wrenching cries. Few albums display this combination of musical depth and aesthetic focus.

Ihsahn's most diverse solo album, with all the metal elements present in previous albums (enhanced by the inclusion of 8-string guitars) along with longer, more progressive passages and a saxophone that works surprisingly well throughout, especially in the closing track "On the Shores."
