Following his departure from Deep Purple due to creative differences, Ritchie Blackmore recruits members of Elf fronted by Ronnie James Dio, to forge a new hard rock outfit. 'Man on the Silver Mountain' is the undeniable centerpiece of the album as it blends Blackmore's heavy, Purple-esque blues-rock riffs with Dio's commanding, theatrical vocals. 'Catch the Rainbow' is a slow, atmospheric track that highlights Dio's vocal versatility, while 'The Temple of the King' showcases a softer, acoustic Renaissance-inspired style. Last but not least point of reference here is the often overlooked 'Sixteenth Century Greensleeves': a dramatic, riff-driven track with a great storyline, the first song that Dio and Ritchie wrote together. It is a strong debut that laid the groundwork for a new subgenre and cemented the chemistry between the two men.
