Still looking to flesh out the sound he would later perfect, here we find Dolphy trying to first get a firm grasp of the -bop structures while also tinkering with them using what he learned under the leadership of Mingus and the like. Contrary to most of his works here after, this is primarily swingy and has rarely any free jazz, but it's no less fascinating and the eerie feeling that drenched Out To Lunch is on embryonic stage here accompanied by more spacy, vaguely eastern-tingued harmonies. Very, very good; Anyone who likes Out To Lunch has absolutely zero reason to miss this.
