Dodheimsgard going out on a limb here. Sounds far removed from anything I heard on A Umbra
Omega but with more melody and harmony, especially in the vocal prowess on "Abyss Perihelion
Transition". Like with every other album, it's going to prove divisive (even amongst
experimental black metal fans), but it's truly a well-earned grower.
Edit: Had to push this up to a 4.5. Just had to.

Im sorry to say it, because I really like this band - especially their last album, A Umbra Omega - but this isnt doing much for me. It doesnt feel like a step forward, more just like they took all the elements that made A Umbra Omega what it was and played them in a different order, but without the frantic energy that made that album so compelling. Some cool moments here and there, but nothing that really delivers on expectations. It might grow on me a little, but probably no higher than a 3.

If you really love the classic sounds of post-metal and black metal, then you will find this new Dødheimsgard record really good. But for me and what I want from post-metal (mainly the shoegaze scene) this is a fairly uninspired listening experience. On several of my listens, I completely forget what I just heard or as soon as it?s over, I have no idea or remembrance of the record. Although the electronic and even synthpop interludes, and/or catch-your-breath moments and a lot of interesting ideas the overall metal sound really is bland and unforgettable.
