Gorgeous production all around, but the slow pace, lack of variety, and overall lack of songs that make me go *wah* are what prevent me from liking this one. Nothing bad here, but all songs seem on the verge of take-off without actually doing it.

It would be wrong to call this a return to form, despite it being the first back-to-back great record the band has released in a hot while. That is because it ain't a form they've had before. This dreary, anxious, yet graciously ageing introspection is something that could have only come at this time in their career. And such a change was quite obviously necessary.

After 40+ years of making a name for themselves, most would expect Depeche Mode to have dried out completely from their talent at this point in their careers. However on this album, it is exactly the opposite. The group continues to thrive in the genre that they pioneered in, while continuing to put their own twist on it and also create an oddly melancholic and dark musical experience. It's not only impressive, but also extremely satisfying and pleasant.
