Experimental in a more coherent and pleasant manner
than the debut, but I still long for the hard-
hitting avant rock from Town Centre. Sanding off
the rough edges has left the product looking a bit
small.

I find it quite intriguing that no one has written a review for this, I just got it on vinyl and rekindled my love for it, so I might go ahead and write one.

Easily my favorite release of the year so far, could very well be AOTY.

'O Monolith' sees Squid bridging the gap between approachable/catchy and experimental/complex incredibly well with a repertoire of tracks that shows off a vast variety of sounds and wonderful instrumental depth. The album's opening track exemplifies all of the aforementioned very well. On the surface 'Swing (In A Dream)' has a A+ hook and is a true earworm but once you dive past that you hear the many, many intricate little details going on musically around that and within the vocals themselves. Immediately after, 'Devil's Den' starts out cautiously, again with some wonderful instrumental arrangements, before exploding into an anxious, noisy finish that pairs whacky vocals with a barrage of dissonant instruments. This mixture of memorable hooks and emotional moments with technical and complex layering of sounds continues and it feels like each song has its own personality that fits into the album as a whole. As good as it gets for noisy/experimental rock/punk in 2023.

Once again Squid pull together an impressive instrumental and stylistic barrage, surpassing expectations and conventions. If you enjoy subverted melodies, drowsy instrumental passages, twisted vocal inflections, and playing guessing games with influences, this is a perfect album, nay a perfect band, for you.

I feel like Squid lost some of their vigor here in favour of some experimentations that do not leverage their complexity into bona fide banger songs.

The UK-based post-Brexit band finally releases their sophomore album after the breathtaking and innovative rebrand of post-punk: ?Bright Green Field?. Squid has an interesting juxtaposition in the grander landscape of the post-Brexit scene with obviously heavy hitters BCNR taking the internet by storm the last few years. On top of the brash and bombastic nature of Black Midi. In many ways, Squid stays in the same vein as their debut. With experimental rock tracks that constantly ebb and flow from fast-paced dance/art punk to light and building post-rock. There is a lot of love on this album and the way every track builds into a triumphant orchestration of guitars and drums. It?s not all perfect though, especially by the end of the album the band spins its progressive wheels too much plus the auto-tune on ?Siphon Song? is extremely degrading to the ears. Overall though the band tries their best to stick out and expand their sound in an innovative and explorative way.
