This is exactly the level-up I was hoping for after the already amazing Twin Plagues. Hartzman's lyrics have reached an even greater level of specific and evocative detail in their portrayal of Southern youth, and her vocal delivery is stunning in its level of passion and nuance. The band fires on all cylinders as well from the powerful, punishing highs to the gorgeous subtler moments. This album confirms Wednesday as the best band we have right now. Bootgaze has found its defining statement.

I think the level of mixing of shoegaze and country is overstated, but maybe that's just me. Some songs are a blend but not to the degree that the hype would suggest, and probably more of an alt rock country vibe anyway when there is considerable crossover. The vocals are pretty average, and frankly some of these songs don't go anywhere. Some good lyrics in places. Standouts are Hot Rotten Grass Smell, Got Shocked, Quarry, and the opening 2.5 minutes of Bull Believer (wish they'd split the song in two)

Bootgaze? This blend of gazey alt-country and noisy indie rock sure has to tickle some yeehaws, but mine seems quite reluctant. The dynamics are there, but they don't embark me. The "soft-loud-soft" structure us post-gang bitches love sound merely aight here. idk sometimes stuff that should be made for you really isn't.

Good indie album! Wednesday sound like they enjoy playing music with each other and like authentic emotion was invoked in their songwriting process! "Bull Believer"- WOW. Karly Hartzman displays a refreshingly blunt lyrical voice and an acceptably blunt singing voice.

Props to the first two tracks coming out of the gate swinging around a filthy, noisy indie rock sound that really makes a basically ten minute track work, and work really really well in a genre where that is not always the case. 'Bull Believer' ends with a Mortal Kombat reference and seemingly after that the album flips a switch to more structured songs and dots in some country vibes into the noisy rock blend. The quality stays consistently great throughout with 'Chosen to Deserve' through 'Quarry' being a particularly good stretch. For my last thought I will steal someone else's take that the vocals are a bit too overly dramatic, eventually for me they become grating the melodies and the texture.

Its mind boggling how many things this album does feel so close to obnoxious or annoying for me, yet it still ends up being amazing; mixing country with shoegaze, the slightly grating raw vocals, placing an 8minute song as the second track of the album. But Rat Saw God just does it for me, and I was delighted and pleasantly engaged throughout. An incredibly niche, yet well done release!

There's a lot of pain in this album. A lot of alcoholism, a lot of self-doubt, a lot of small town ennui, a lot of achingly sad poetry. Best songs: 'Bull Believer', 'Formula One', 'Chosen to Deserve'

This is good! I'm not as huge on it as some of the other people on this site, but to be fair I would've never guessed that I'd like a shoegaze-y country album as much as this. And yeah, Bull Believer really is something else.
