Holy snorefest, the singles are the best songs here and they were uniformly basic bitch boring. The last Big Red
Machine album has about six songs better than anything included here…they’re done

Look. I get it. This band has obviously become
complacent with their sound over the years. I
have been on this site for over 20 years. I
haven't changed my avatar since like 2006.I'm
old and depressed and this is comfort food. As
people grow older, sometimes boring is good.
I'm 36 now. I am boring. I know what I am and
clearly the National know what they are to.
I'm ok with that.

Even with tempered expectations after I Am Easy to Find, this foray into milquetoast indie folk was still pretty disappointing to hear from one of my top favorite bands for the past decade at least. ...Easy to Find for all its faults at least had a few great tracks that lived up to their classic period. This just sounds tepid and unimaginative too much of the time, and those features are a joke with what wastes they are. I thought Berninger's lyrics were lower quality on the last one but this album takes it another level lower. Sticksman Devendorf also gets very little to do that's impressive. Favs are T-Shirt, This Isn't Helping, Tropic Morning News, Ice Machines, and Your Mind is Not Your Friend, three of which were singles.

I reckon I'll start a band called sth like The Production and release albums with titles like "The Side Effects of Hunting Down Moby Dick" with songs of equally pretentious quasi-witty nature, so that ageing indie connaisseurs lose their collective shit and people who actually studied music explode in rage.

This Isn't Helping saved this from 3.0 for me. Really disappointing effort, it seems that rthey ran out of ideas. I will be surprised if they ever make another 4.5+ album.
