Dylan's not kidding when he says Harding "was never known to make a foolish move"--the wisest thing the bandit did was to get out of his own song by the third stanza, before his story got too morally ambiguous. Much of the album is built on unresolved fragments and haunting half-scenes, which at their best have all the surreality of earlier albums without some of the excess.

Long time Dylan fan, but just discovered this record recently. Dylan's often most praised for his mid-60s work and rock stuff, but the rustic-country Dylan that appeared in the late-60's and early 70's was just as good. This is up there with Dylan's best work.

And Bob Dylan did shit, and his shit did come in the form of platitudes and banal parables whose emptiness was concealed behind a veneer of incomprehensibility. And the assembled crowd did applaud and shout his praises, saying "Lo, what a great man is Bob Dylan, and what a prophet, to shit thus! If only he might grace us with a song or two!" And then, opening his windows with a look of disdain, Bob Dylan called down to them, "Folks, I don't feel like picking up my guitar tonight, but I think you'll all agree that that shit was the most profound thing you've ever heard in your life. You can leave your money with any of the four servants currently out on the lawn..."

The calm after the storm of three wildly electric, eclectic albums, 'John Wesley Harding's understated, mellow nature is just as unsettling as it is surprising. Whilst the songs are largely good and consistent, the album's attempts to achieve greatness are ultimately left to a handful of excellent songs. There's nothing REALLY wrong with it, it just doesn't measure up to Dylan's mercurial standards.
