Although overlooked by many I consider Hold Your Fire a hidden gem among the 80-90's era of rush i never really liked anything of there's from that period but it's slowly grown on me.
Definitly one of the better although usually overlooked rush albums and a step up from signals especially in the guitar department

What does this album have going for it? The lyrics are actually pretty good. Other than that, it's 50 minutes of the most over produced, generic chord progressions, lifeless songwriting, bass lines and riffs that go nowhere, forgettable synths and lazy vocals. Rush messed up on this one. They were so restrained that they forgot to be good. It is quite possibly the most boring album I have ever heard. At least BOTDF actually has energy. I love Rush, but c'mon. This album is easily their worst. And it's pretty overlong, too.

Excellent songs on this one. It is easiest to list the weaker songs - High Water and Open Secrets - because all the others are just so good.

This is possibly one of Rush's top five records, and definitely a standout amongst their 80's archive. There is a bit more experimentation here, but it fits the bands sound tremendously. Though there is an 80's presence throughout the record, it somehow seems to transcend the general cheesey quality of the eras music and really makes it work for them. This album seems to be greatly over-looked when people look for new Rush albums to check out amongst their vast array...this one should definitely not be missed.

Hold Your Fire is aptly titled for a record released by a power trio forgetting it was a power trio. The MTV video for Time Stand Stills (witness the carnage on Youtube if you must) personifies this album perfectly. Fortunately in this record's aftermath, the band members have an epiphany to reconsider its addiction to synthesizers.

I quite like this period of Rush. More concise songwriting, and Geddy is just killing it on the bass on tracks like "Force Ten," and "Turn The Page." "Time Stand Still" is probably Rush's best pop moment, unless "Limelight" is to be considered a pop song.

The "imma listen to this in my sleep" Rush album. Great set of songs, just that production is so artificial it demands no attention from my ears. This isn't like Signals dream sequence-like melodies, this is more like melodrama heard miles away.

Gone is Rush's former "umph," where we had beat-driven tracks, heavily guitar-laden tracks, or where lyrical content was contemplative. Granted, "Tai Shan" has a nice atmosphere to it, but the rest of the album feels like standard 80s synth-rock to me with nothing special.

At first, I didn't like some of the album, but the lyrics won me over gradually. The last two songs in particular are quite good, particularly Tai Shan, which is absolutely beautiful. Listening to that song makes one feel like they are one with nature almost. The rest of the album deals with sensations and feelings, which I was unprepared for, but I liked it overall.
