Easily the best post-punk album of all time. Joy Division can't touch this and I'm sick of critics thinking otherwise. Oh well, to each his own.

Gang of Four are the forefathers of the kind of post-punk so unfortunately misremembered nowadays. Sure, every now and again you get a band like Shame, Squid, Shopping or Dry Cleaning, but mostly the revivalists of today like the genre at its most stale, with eyeliner, synths and low monotone baritone. It's a shame, because arguably no band has as much stylistic gravitas to offer as Gang of Four do. Even if their creative genius was somewhat shortlived and almost none of their following experiments panned out, 'Entertainment!' and 'Solid Gold' still stand as perhaps the greatest post-punk essentials out there.

24/1001rThis album has a lot of merit. The songs throughout sounds interesting and creative without blending together. It?s strongest aspect is without a doubt the riffs, which are great most tracks, especially highlighted on Natural Goods. The vocals I think are a bit hit or miss. On some songs they add character and work, while on others they just feel out of place.

Gang of the cool. Really classy, gritty (post) punky album that doesn't really have all that many 5/5 tracks for me but also is always successful. The style is far from gothic depression and is much closer to the punk roots of the genre; it evokes Minutemen and Television. The only part of the album I did not dig at all was the first 50s of 6 which are a bit slow and awkward. Otherwise, some of the tracks have a really cool and artfully stuttery quality to their riffage which makes them not very socially ok music but absolutely cool (1,6 after the intro, the ultra cool 10); some have a really fun Double Nickels on the Dime vibe to them (2, the funkey classic 4,7,9); 12 has a really cool noisy intro and works well as an conclusion track; and the rest is just outright good tracks without being too outstanding, but still fun to jam. Extremely consistent album as the outstanding tracks are nicely sprinkled all over. 4.15

The interplay and bass work is addicting. The lyrics are well-written and I concede on that front despite being staunchly against communism and the rise of communism in all countries, globally. But yeah, the music itself is insane and the band had ridiculously tight chemistry that allowed them to experiment with punk rock and disco, obviously influential, but sounding very fresh. Not every song is a winner, but most are and it doesn't get that old and tiresome, as I had previously charged.
