Classic Katatonia with their gothic alt prog metal that is very competent and very good yet it always fails to fully embark me on its journey.

I am not certain what to call this subgenre (proggy melodeath?), but it certainly seems like the glam metal of the age.

As a long time fan, I consider this to be their worst album to date. rPlus: Jonas singing seems to be improving every album. Author could be their best song to date.rMinus: uninspiring songwriting and guitar playing for most of the album. Total autopilot stuff. Its like they asked chatGTP to write a katatonia album without either heaviness or memorable parts.

This is modern Katatonia doing modern Katatonia things, but this album is more entertaining and memorable than anything they've done in a while. While I would like them to step outside of their comfort zone (I'm still waiting for them to make the metal version of the Disintegration album), this is still a great album. "Sky Void of Stars" is a heavier, more energetic, Katatonia that still retains their morose atmospheres and slower, moodier, passages. It's also one of the catchiest albums in their discography. I also like the occasional proggy flourishes.
