| 3.5 great | TheIllmatics | February 13th 11 | I'm surprised. Great production, great lyrics (especially considering it's 50) and not as many terrible pop
songs that dominated Curtis. 50's lyrics are a lot more aggressive now and you can tell from the first track
that 50 is back and he's pretty damn pissed. For example "Your daddy fucked your mama then fucked your
sister/then climbed in your bed playing with your sugar/go ahead, take your belt off and hang
yourself/matter of fact, grab your strap and bang yourself" and "This ain't Tha Carter, nigga this is
Sparta/It's harder/I'll die and be a martyr/respect me like your father". He also he keeps the guests to a bare
minimum, with Eminem being the only other rapper on the album making an appearance on "Psycho", which
sounds like a leftover track from Relapse (in a good way). Tracks 1-9 are all great and actually some of 50's
best, but after that he sort of goes back to generic songs bouncing back and forth between getting girls
and being a gangster. The second half of it is alright, but nothing 50 hasn't done before. But the first half of
the album is definitely worth a listen. Best tracks - Death to My Enemies, So Disrespectful, Psycho and
Stretch.
Also, it is actually quite pathetic that 50 managed to make a better album than Rakim this year.

| 3.0 good | AggravatedYeti | November 19th 09 | Fitty spends the better half of the decade making more money and fucking more bitches than you. All the while making 1 good album and some great singles. I guess he was listening to all the shit people were talking about his skill cause here he goes making his best album since 'Get Rich'. 'Before I Self Destruct' is not groundbreaking by any means, but the beats are deep and mean and his syrupy flow has found it self again along with his pen. Its not an album full of a predominance of hip hip love songs and a couple of street worthy bangers here an there. It's actually got some kind of structure(albeit *loose*) and attention to the filler tracks as opposed to just the 4 hit singles.

| 0.0 | Bulldog | November 13th 09 | 50 Cent has always been recognized as a mainstream success with radio hits like In da Club and Disco Inferno. But, Fiddy has a gangsta side to him (need you be reminded he was shot nine times in 2000.) And perhaps BISD is a reminder from the man himself. Jackson shows his violent side throughout the album, smoothly delivering gangsta lyrics - some of which are actually quite witty - on the majority of the songs. However, the production is considerably bad for a full-length, fully funded album - especially for being released under a record label of which Dr. Dre is the CEO of - and this holds BISD's potential back considerably. The production can best be described as an awkward mixture of alternative, east coast, and mainstream styles. Although probably unnecessary to state, this does not mesh with 50 Cent's lyrics. Yet, there are a handful of good songs on Before I Self Destruct - and those that are have good production - but it's not worth buying the entire album. If Fifty had thrown out the charcoal and kept the diamonds, this would be a remarkable LP. Before I Self Destruct is certainly a rebound from Curtis, but it's definitely not a classic.

| 3.0 good | VTK | November 16th 09 | A friend bought this and played some songs while we worked out on the gym. The album is horrible - so generic yet so pretentious it will not only bore you, it will also make you very irritated. As usual, mainstream hip hop has very little to offer in terms of substance and sticks to a "winning formula" that was fresh... more than a decade ago.
