4.5 superb | Tjatkinson1998 | September 11th 22 | Man I have always known JID?s talent, but he absolutely killed it on this record. Mad crazy flows (of which he has many), fantastic lyricism and great beat picking make for a great album. The features are also great with everyone bringing their a game with the standout being that killer verse from Yasiin Bey. Truly brilliant stuff from JID, bringing a very personal tale and expressing himself in the best way possible. One of this years best! Score: 9/10 Faves: Sistanem, Crack Sandwich and Stars. Weakest Track (still good though): Can?t Make U Change

3.5 great | ajcollins15 | August 31st 22 | It?s interesting to see the huge amount of hype this album got for years after JID came out with, what I want to call, the DAMN that Kendrick Lamar could never make. ?DiCaprio 2? was a lowkey but explosive set of tracks with introspective bars with intricate and intricate wordplay while also having some heavy-hitting southern hardcore hip hop beats that all felt surreal to hear in 2018. Well, nearly five years later we get his third record, ?The Forever Story?, in which JID sonically does not know if he wants to double dip with that success or go down the more neo-soul path while continuing to refine and showcase his lyricism. TFS gives us the strongest outing yet of lyrics yet with some extremely detailed rhymes and flows. However, the sonic aspects of this album are a bit, rough. On the first few listens everything is pretty much a heavy-hitting banger except for ?Money? and ?Better Days? which are these extremely annoying beats and samples that make it hard to sit through (especially the extremely washed-out bass in ?Money?). But the more I have listened most of the neo-soul leaning tracks are a bit-to-be-desired. JID just does not sound very good over the soul style for me. Still tracks like ?Raydar?, ?Dance Now?, ?Crack Sandwich?, ?Can?t Punk Me?, ?Surround Sound?, and ?Bruddanem? are all extreme highlights and the current closer in ?Lauder Too? is a pretty solid track. Overall, it?s hard to say I was disappointed because most of the album is above solid or great, if not amazing, but there are some low-quality tracks and ideas that are really holding this back.

5.0 classic | Skiiddz | October 13th 22 | Man can sound like 2 different features in the same track when he wants to, holy shit we always knew JID had it in him! absolutely incredible project with amazing production to boost. Album has that story like feel found in all the classics of hip hop that I've yet to see recaptured in a couple years. Probs will be hip hop record of the year.

4.5 superb | DavidPrincipe29 | October 2nd 22 | The more I listen to it, the more natural it feels. JID's flows along with the flow of the whole album are just an amazing combo.

4.5 superb | XSebbyMcMuffinX | September 11th 22 | After letting this sink in, it's actually better than I initially thought. The way the lyrical themes tie together is really clever. It covers his come-up and dealing with money and "the devil's temptations," sure, but the way he portrays how family matters within the influence of growing up in poverty really helps get across a clear picture, visually and mentally. JID has an impressive amount of subtlety for someone who's capable of being flashy. Just about all of the main attributes that a rapper can do well, he pulls off; Commercial appeal, technical flows, smooth double talk, conscious lyrics that don't over-preach, a wide variety of beats, and even some well-sung passages. The features all fit well into their tracks, but JID is definitely a big part of why they shine, as he balances off of their contributions perfectly, such as in "Just in Time." Something particular special about JID that's further exemplified on this album is his ability to really bring an instrumental to life with the way he structures his approach, which he has achieved a very fine balance with on here, both on individual tracks and throughout the album. Probably the biggest flaw out of the whole thing is the album essentially feeling like two halves, being front-loaded with bangers followed by mostly melodic, more vulnerable cuts after. It's not detrimental enough to lessen the songs, but a transitional track might've done wonders, considering everything else was mostly on point. Heavy contender for album of the year.

3.9 excellent | Erwann S. STAFF | September 5th 22 | Mega record this one. As banging as it is soulful, The Forever Story features many ambiances - and many unnecessary features -, beat switches (hell yeah), changing flows (hell yeah), and dope storytelling. It does slightly drop off in the second half - no tune is bad, but much less explosive and expressive both lyrically and musically compared to the first half.

0.0 | InFiction | August 30th 22 | Kendrick comparisons are probably a faux pas, but considering how strong his pen game and flows are, it's honestly astounding that JID isn't on his level of popularity just yet. If I could invest stocks into a rapper, it would be JID, because with his level of talent and raw skill, he's a ticking time bomb at this point.
