4.0 excellent | StrizzMatik | September 14th 22 | If Peter Gabriel got in a fight with Santana, Blackstar
Bowie, Steely Dan and Radiohead, it might sound like this.
Wholly different than anything they've ever done before, and
great for it. TMV is a bit of a spiritual continuation
of what they were doing on Octahedron and Noctourniquet in
that they've drastically "simplified" their sound for more of
a straightforward musical format, but this time around the
band leans on their Latin roots and goes for an experimental
jazz / R&B pop direction that, even if entirely different,
still exemplifies how singular and original this band
continues to be 20+ years later. While the insane prog
wankery is noticeably absent, it's Cedric who takes the MVP
with his most emotional performance ever closely followed by
Marcel shredding it on the keys. The dissonant Omar melodies
are all still in there, touched up with his most tasteful
guitar work ever, and Willy's tightly syncopated jazz
drumming with incredibly melodic basslines from founding
member Eva Gardner really show off the band's secret ability
to create absolutely BEAUTIFUL music when they want to. It's
incredibly polarizing already to the fanbase for good reason,
but the s/t is probs their best music since the Frances / Amp
days. Grower for sure

1.5 very poor | ajcollins15 | September 20th 22 | It?s tough to come in and say I was not extremely disappointed in this new Mars Volta album. One of the most legendary modern progressive rock bands had such a strong ability to produce explosive and intricate progressive rock bangers with some lush experimentation from areas Latin rock and others. They took the ideas of the classic 70s prong bands and expanded upon them. With the band coming back over ten years later I never expected them to try and recapture that sound and style and to be honest the one positive of this new album is exactly that, the band seems to be trying to find new footing for a new sound. But damn is this album boring, one-dimensional, and lacking in energy. The whole album just feels like a drag of a listens and I have a hard time finding any stand-out tracks other than maybe the first two singles that were released. Overall, this is not a good album from the band, but I hope it?s a step into a better and new sound.

4.5 superb | Fearlessflyer1986 | September 14th 22 | The album is hauntingly gorgeous. It maintains
a cohesive theme, while still somehow still
holding that Mars Volta sound. The organic tone
throughout gives each band member room to
breathe, carrying tons of atmosphere.

5.0 classic | ShadowOfTheCitadel | September 14th 22 | Cedric's best vocal performance both singing and lyrically. He built a brand off of being
cryptic and completely unhinged, which makes it all the more poetic and powerful that all he
really needed to do was dig deep internally. Omar's guitar is missing through the first half
save a geet solo here or there, but he ends up dominating the lion's share of powerful
moments after Vigil, the album's centerpiece. His melody at the end of Cerulea is one of the
saddest guitar lines I've ever heard emotionally, especially given the lyrical context of the
song. The album belongs mostly to Cedric and Marcel, who takes the shred Omar gave during
the early output and applies it to his keys. He pulls out insane jazz runs, groovy soul
chords and some downright crazy noise on a few tracks. Better than Octahedron, Bedlam In
Goliath and Noctourniquet.
There's two tracks on here that have the classic Volta spirit, too.

3.0 good | Chino smoking it up! | November 6th 22 | Its okay...a little too Cedric worship and everything serving it (and he's not even that good here).rI miss the conflict of the instruments trying to stand out on each track. Also, its a no rocker

3.0 good | terriblekonrad | September 12th 22 | I don't know what to think about it. It's well crafted and produced, but it's to safe and melancholic on the other side, which shocked that the title album is named by the band name. Ironic, but there's not many landmark moments from The Mars Volta, it's spanish oriented chilled and atmospheric experimental rock music, not memorable.
