Alanis will always be remembered for Jagged Little Pill, which is a masterpiece in it's own right, but SFIJ is an amazingly complex, intricate, experimental, beautiful disaster of an album. I've never run into another album quite like it; it's incredibly personal, like reading someone's private journal... the songs have a prose-like quality that give it an intimacy missing from other work by Alanis. Unfortunately, this album has largely been forgotten and subsequent albums by Alanis have been far more tame, far more unoriginal and far more boring... this is an overlooked gem.

Although I originally didn't like this album very much, after a few listens, it's grown on me. This album is such a drastic change from the simple pop style of Jagged Little Pill that I was caught off guard and turned off to the music. But after going back into it with an open mind, I've found that this album isn't quite as bad as I once believed it to be. Of course, it still has its shortcomings, but we'll get to those later. Let's talk about what this album does right. The lyrics and vocals have improved immensely, and the album features a more experimental sound, and it works well... some of the time. I still think Alanis Morisette is better off making dumb, simple pop music. She ends up re-using a lot of the same instrumental patterns and sounds in some songs, and that's why parts of this album are forgettable. But, there are plenty of gems here including "Front Row", "Baba", "Thank U", "Are You Still Mad", "Can't Not", "UR", "One", "So Pure", and "Joining You", that help you forget about all the crap in between.

When it was released, SFIJ wasn't as lauded as Alanis' international debut. Instead, fans were sort of disappointed and many didn't even give it a chance. What I think is that this is one of the finest rock albums to come out during the 1990s. It certainly isn't Jagged Little Pill part 2 (as many were expecting) but it is a gorgeous and mysterious bit of music that succeeds sonically and lyrically. 'Thank U' 'Joining You' 'So Pure' 'Can't Not' 'Baba' 'Front Row' and 'Would Not Come' are late 90s Alanis at her best.
