the atmosphere doesn't gel with the songwriting and there's phrases that practically sound like Kings of Leon, agh, plenty of better goth this year where you can hear the bass

The boys are back on form here, this is about all I can ask for from a very 80s gothic rock/darkwave heavy post-punk album in 2022. It doesn't do anything new but the sound/songwriting/riffs/melodies are all pretty much on point. Not quite as memorable or varied in the songwriting department as that debut but it does what it's intended to do.

Preoccupations' newest is a bit less cerebral than their previous two albums, and generally seems to be a fusion of the sonic, industrialised direction of S/T and 'New Material', as well as 'Viet Cong's heavy, driving punkiness. It's a drilling, melancholic record Preoccupations only could ever make. Quite the treat.

I don't really get the somewhat "lukewarm" reception this is getting here, I honestly believe its their best record since their debut, probably. It may be just as good as that one.
