At the time completely unique and only revoked of this status by other Braxton projects, For Alto ris exclusively one man with a saxophone and no overdubbing. Despite the daunting idea of no rhythm rsection on an album that's well an over an hour, this album is actually quite calming, for the rmost part - Excluding the exhilarating opener "To Composer John Cage", there are many points in rthis album that sound like they written for a hard bop tune or jazz balad but were stripped of all rbut the sax. While perhaps not always too enjoyable to listen to (Particularly the last two rtracks), For Alto is more readily enjoyable than some descriptors of it may tell you, and by rconcept alone it is a tour de force for anyone interested in more out there music with historical rvalue.
