Relationship of Command beta. Mathy structure + noise rock loudness and dissonance + post-hardcore energy + kinda emotional vocals. Sometimes a bit obtuse, but it feels like a real grower. I didn't jam it hard back when I discovered post-hardcore, but now it sounds like an absolute essential.

Tbh the rating should be higher. Definitely a matter of taste but I prefer this to Relationship of Command any day. Anyhow, this is a must listen for any post-hardcore fan.

Penetrates the ears and it's one of those albums that's unlovable for the sake for of being unlovable. But it excels with musicianship, and it's math rock incorporated into emo but avoids most pretentiousness that often comes with that combo.

I miss the days where major labels took chances on bands like Drive like Jehu. Yank Crime is certainly not the most marketable or accessible record. The ambitious record is frantic, sinister and abrasive. The intense, hard charging tracks are filled with awkward time signatures, and what little hooks there are tend to get buried in these expansive songs due to a lack of vocal variety from Rick Froberg. I do like his voice, he just doesn't switch it up as much as he did on their debut. And that's the main difference between their 2 albums, they were both dense and complex, but there were quite a few standout moments on the s/t, and Yank Crime simply doesn't have them. Best enjoyed as a single piece rather than track by track.
