Counterparts are back and still playing to their strengths with visceral, disturbingly brutal crackdowns of almost crusty metalcore. But as much as I usually find their music quite one-dimensional and plain, something about the melody work, lyrics, and crisp sound of this record kept me coming back and enjoying it quite more.

Counterparts' latest full-length is not the best solely because it's some of the band's tightest work to date. It's not the best
solely because of the fraught emotion that litters each lyric and each scream. It's not even the best because of the genuine
evolution and turn into more melodic vocals and guitar work. It's the best because all of these elements work together to
create a genuinely spellbinding experience

Idk why this is looked at more fondly than NLTL on here. By no means do I think it's even a regression for them. There was just something about the last one that resonates with me more. Still don't think this band has made anything close to bad. Fuck tha hataaaas. I said biiiiiiitch.....

Counterparts is a perfect example of a classic metalcore band trying to cling onto those old-school fans that really cannot except the fact that metalcore in this vein really as not sounded good for many years (especially with the advent of post-metalcore and the resurgence of mathcore and sasscore). It?s not a bad album, but it is completely overhyped by the old-head metalcore fans that will do anything for those blistering and melodic guitar tones and drum-fill breakdowns.

Pretending this is the highlight of their discography is disingenuous. RIP Kuma tho. While it's their worst since Current, it's still a solid record. What really ruins its chance to compete is a much stronger focus on boring as hell metalcore "chugs," rather than the faster moments that characterized a lot of their best songs (Compass, YNYA). The slightly stronger emphasis on clean vocals falls flat, since they all suck, and Brendan's yells are layered throughout the entire album, which is stupid but fittingly Misery Signals of them.
