The discography for the Flaming Lips is a true enigma. Literally none of their albums could be mistaken for one another, due to the large difference every album has from the last. The results may be inconsistent and tedious to some, but very few of their albums could be written off as uninteresting. Currently, the band is in the state of making psychedelic, trippy, challenging music that always has a poppy undertone, but their early days are much different. Hear It Is is a dark, trippy, unsettling, psychedelic adventure. But, they had no idea what sound to settle on around this time. Certain songs sound like they have potential, but most of them don't develop into much more than that. A lot of the tracks take obvious influence from folks such as the Butthole Surfers and Sonic Youth, but there is a very traditional, eerie punk vibe going that doesn't develop into much beyond a few tracks. At least it's interesting, and it has one masterpiece (Jesus Shootin' Heroin).
