| 3.0 good | iDontaeCareFAM | February 21st 23 | Okay so I've been getting into the album and it's not that bad, there's some cool moments here and there but it borrows too much from Mr. Bungle and Cardiacs, it just makes me want to go listen to them instead.

| 3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | December 29th 22 | 'Hellfire' has a lot of amazing musicianship, layering of many many numerous instruments and a great energy. As far as prog goes, it has a lot of things you want with various song structures and whackiness without pretentiousness, I get a sense that these guys live it the way they write it. Didn't quite stick for me personally as much as many others and maybe that energy is the reason. While I like the pace, it just rarely ever stops and there is always a ton going on so its hard to appreciate some of the nuances because it just goes and goes without relief.

| 3.6 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | August 26th 22 | A refinement on the mid Cavalcade, Hellfire kinda justifies how much of a slog the preceding record is: this is basically the same dadaist brutal jazzy avant-prog shizzle. Still, this time the compositions are properly engaging. This is the main difference, really: the songs are better. Still ain't focused enough to properly awe from front to back, but a refinement of their previous proposition.

| 4.0 excellent | YRI | July 23rd 22 | Seems like 2022 could be the best year the Windmill Scene will ever have. If Squid also happen to drop something that's near as good as this and Ants From Up There, then it's official.

| 4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | July 21st 22 | The more I have listened to ?Hellfire? and last year's ?Cavalcade? the more obvious it has become how much they are supposed to be ?movie-like? and companion pieces, with the latter being a drama and the former being an action movie. However, I am not here to review both albums and how they relate, that will take many more listens. For now, ?Hellfire? is a continuation of the band's loud and extreme version of progressive rock and jazz rock. This album is somehow, even more, turned up to 11 in the abstractness than ?Cavalcade? was, and I love nearly even a minute of it. This album is also much more ?play/theatrical-like? than past releases which is an interesting dynamic to hear from the band. Although I might find ?Cavalcade? to be a much more complete listen, ?Hellfire? is a much stronger sonic album with the brutality of it. Out of all post-Brexit/new-wave post-punk bands, Black Midi is driving farther and farther from that style and it will be fascinating to see what they do next because I don?t know how long the band can sustain this sound.

| 5.0 classic | eureka | July 14th 22 | This is going to be one of those albums I have to hear a few times before I have a solid opinion on it, but I like it a lot so far - the musicianship and execution here are top-notch.

| 2.0 poor | REANIMATED | June 27th 22 | If you're hoping the rest will be as good as Welcome to Hell and Eat Men Eat, you will be sorely
disappointed. Production is only marginally better than Cavalcade's and most of the music is,
shockingly, far weaker, as the band pivot away from noise rock almost entirely, instead turning to
carnival music and post-ironic smooth jazz fusion.
