| 2.5 average | LukeN4HisDestNE | June 23rd 22 | If I had a dollar for every minute of boring intros to post black metal songs, I'd be, at the very least, a millionaire.

| 2.5 average | Inoculaeted | June 23rd 22 | Quiet/Loud dynamic grows tiresome when it doesnt aspire to conjoin as one at any point. On
closer inspection this album is shockingly stale. Its mostly blast beats and tremolo picking to
a hard stop saxophone ambiance just to get back to the black metal monotony. Either make a way
cooler black metal part or make a way cooler atmospheric jazz part. Dont give me the derivative
version of both on some moronic hour long conga line.

| 0.0 | Gary STAFF | June 22nd 22 | Leviathan was pretty nice, but the rest of the album was... quite boring. Don't get me wrong, it's a quite unique record, but sadly most of these songs just "flew by" and ngl, I cannot remember any cool moments from this other than the beast opener song. Mild disappointment at first, might be a grower later.

| 4.0 excellent | Brandon Scott EMERITUS | June 8th 22 | This is a step up from Love Exchange Failure and the band's most compelling and thorough synthesis of black metal and jazz yet.

| 3.4 great | Erwann S. EMERITUS | August 29th 22 | Black metal already proved to fusion well with many genres: why not dark jazz? These dark jazz parts add a "film noir" vibe that works well with the band's gloomy take on atmoblack, both aesthetics giving space to let the other one leverage its dynamism. Shame the best example of such an aesthetic is the opener, the rest of the album offering a tad too much monotony.

| 3.5 great | Zakusz | June 16th 22 | My 2000th rating, and I cannot think of a better one to give it to. What an album, could be a contender for me for AOTY after three full listens. Gotta spend more time with it though

| 4.5 superb | LucretiaMyReflection | November 29th 23 | I have been following the Ukrainian experimental/atmospheric black metal outfit White Ward since the release of their 2017 albumFutility Report. The band have continued to wow me with every release, adding new colors and sounds to their rich auditory landscape. However, with this year?s False Light, I believe White Ward has supplied us with the full package. From the album art and supplemental visual materials, the record seems to reflect upon suburban decay and forgotten structures, a very possible meditation on their war-torn native country. All of this can be surmised before even hearing a single note of music.rThe music perfectly reflects the dystopian nature of first impressions. The band have kept the foundation of their powerful and sprawling black metal assault with loads of atmosphere and jazz noir saxophone inflections, but this time adding in influence of spacious, dark, and gothic neofolk akin to something like Current 93, Death In June, or King Dude. This inclusion adds unexpected dour clean vocals and dreary melodies accompanied by acoustic guitars. There is even a trumpet that sits somewhere between Miles Davis?s smoky fusion and Ennio Morricone?s masterful Spaghetti Western film scores. In summation, this album is not something I can truly describe in words. My best recommendation would be to pick it up on vinyl, sit down with it on the stereo, pour over the breathtaking photography by Lucas Deshazer, and get lost in the sonic journey.

| 4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | June 23rd 22 | On the band's true third album they continue to dial in their ambitious and dark sound with their unique fusion of atmospheric black metal and dark jazz. What?s most impressive about the album is the extreme balancing act that is done with these two Seemingly opposite genres of music. Several artists throughout the last 10 to 20 years have tried the sound but always lack the ability to fully fuse the two genres instead they opt to make it a two-sided affair with neither genre really being put together. Truly an amazing listen from front to back and to top it all off the subtle nuance infuses other genres like post-punk and alternative metal here in there as the album goes along.

| 4.0 excellent | FunJan | June 20th 22 | For me it is more difficult to get into it than their record before. But False Light is the better record. I hope it will grow on me.

| 4.5 superb | Kees Visser | June 14th 22 | This album can compete with almost all the distinctive albums of all the distinctive metal bands that have radvanced the genre. Most importantly, the album contains only great songs, there is a lot of beauty to find inside the rsongs. The album itself and the majority of the songs are characterized by a constant alternation between quiet and fast rpassages. White Ward also pushes the boundaries of the genre through a mix of metal, jazz (eg sax) and ambient sound rand will hopefully inspire more metal bands to make groundbreaking music.
