2.5 average | Disorderly | May 13th 22 | very boring, extremely self-indulgent at points while feeling very hollow. I don't know, I love Kendrick, and I'll have to give this another go, but this was really disappointing on first listen, bar a few pretty good tracks.

4.0 excellent | oedipusrex | May 13th 22 | Initial thoughts - Insane production probably one of the best ever (rivalling any of Kanye's works etc.). Brilliant features, all of them had a clear purpose in the songs they were in. GFK, Taylour Paige and Sampha were brilliant so was Beth rGibbons in Mother I Sober. Lyrically, I thought the first half had quite a few fairly average tracks but had some real gems as well. I was a huge fan of N95, Father Time and We Cry Together. But THE SECOND HALF WAS ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWING. And I'm not even overstating this. It was Kendrick at his absolute best, commenting on social issues with remarkable aplomb and voicing his opinion in an exceedingly beautiful manner. His disagreements with the common perceptions in the African American community and how personal events in his life led him to forming his opinions. Everything from the Savior interlude onwards is a must listen. He absolutely kills every track thereafter. Again these are initial thoughts and just my opinion, maybe I'll find some more meaning on a re-listen. It's a solid 8.5/10 for me on the back of that truly magnificent second half.

3.5 great | SpideryMan | May 13th 22 | I just appreciate having more kendrick lamar.
It's solid stuff, guys.
Edit: After hearing the entire record, twice. I
have to say I could've seen this working as a
follow up right after damn, maybe a year or two
later. As a finished project it is
disappointing. Nowhere on the same level
as the pre damn albums and not quite as snappy
or in your face as damn was at it's best.
I appreciate the visceral social deconstruction
on display here, but the actual rapping isn’t
great. It seems like much less of a rap album
and much more of a venting session with some
good singing and slower jams on Mr. Morale. If
it takes another five years for Kendrick to do
something, I'll probably have lost interest.

4.0 excellent | FiniteLoop | May 10th 22 | do you guys think the "big steppers" are the predominant figures that strove outside the expected confines of black culture that he referenced in the Heart 5's video? If so, is Kendrick meant to be Mr Morale? The lyricism expressed discontent with his reception in black culture and how little impact he's had compared to these big steppers in spite of the fact that some of them have also done so much harm and it's obvious that he wants them to want him.

4.5 superb | kevnb | May 13th 22 | "this is going to piss off a lot of conservative people lol" I doubt it, maybe a few racist
extremists. Honestly the extreme left would be just as offended by his lyrics. Also keep in mind,
the cartoon version of the world on twitter and news programs is bs. "I have no idea what everyone
is talking about. This thing rules" This website isn't the best at reviewing rap albums.

3.5 great | Luna | May 13th 22 | Seems like some are a bit too eager to take up the contrarian torch, no? The features are well-suited to their tracks, the production is incredible, the songwriting is dynamic, and the lyrical depth is there to be dissected if you're up for it. I wouldn't consider it peak Kenny, but it certainly does not disappoint.

4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | May 18th 22 | Kendrick Lamar's fifth full-length album might be a tough pill to swallow for some, but for me, this is a small return to greatness; at least after creating one of the greatest albums of all-time in TPAB and probably the best trio of albums in Section .80, GKMC, and TPAB. DAMN was never a great album from Kendrick. Lyrically it is his most confused and that shows sonically with some of the most one-dimensional production and sonic landscapes Kendrick has really ever shown. MM&BS is the lyrical underpinning that DAMN could never accomplish, the sonic landscape that DAMN could never reach, and the acceptance of Kendrick himself, that DAMN brought into question. This album is Kendrick showcasing himself as a regular human being with mental health issues that all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, or sexuality have. With that, we also get some of the most experimental production choices we have ever seen Kendrick work with. The opening track, ?United in Grief? (produced by post-minimalist pianist Duval Timothy) has such a knack for creating an off-kilter feeling, especially with the pianos and synths that come in over the very jazzstep style drums. Moving on through the biggest thing this new near-masterpiece continues to show us that the higher you put artists and musicians, especially when they create ?masterpieces? the more likely those individuals will develop a slew of mental illnesses and disorders. Kendrick has accepted that he cannot change the world himself, and that is a huge burden to move on from for him.

3.0 good | Monstar1790 | May 16th 22 | There are masterful moments here (particularly on the second half) mixed with half-baked
hooks, new age musings, questionable takes, Kodak Black, and the nigh-unlistenable "We Cry
Together". This is the album Kendrick needed to make for himself, entertainment value and
cohesion be damned.

4.5 superb | XSebbyMcMuffinX | May 16th 22 | This album is salvation and a total piece of shit. There, now that we got the silly part out of the way: This is K Dot covering the toxicity in the culture at the root of interpersonal relationships, starting with our selves. He's still doing the same shit he's always done. He's still saying simple things that people aren't thinking about enough to get the true meaning of. His flows aren't as aggressive or technically savvy this time around, but he still tastefully switches it up a lot, and it serves as a basis for baring soul. This album is a therapy session, flat-out. And simultaneously, he's still locked into that public expectation and pulling it off. While there're 2-4 tracks that don't hit the same, the album as a whole conveys a very important process of self-reflection and internalization. This album will positively impact many people. It's a success in my book.

4.0 excellent | platttt | April 9th 24 | 'Mother | Sober' is one of the best tracks Kendrick has ever released. The first half did not have me confident in this record at all, 'N95' in particular. Father Time and United in Grief are great, but I finished the nine tracks disappointed. The back half, where it feels like he really opens up is where it really started to blow me away. Not quite enough to make up for the lackluster tracks, but still a great comeback from "DAMN."

4.0 excellent | cjbizzlebizzle | October 20th 22 | Another awesome adventure from Kendrick. Right now it feels like Kendrick had way too many bangers and amazing singles early in his discography and now an album like this, which is a lot different than his previous efforts will get a bit less praise. 'To Pimp a Butterfly' perfectly skirted the line between serious/artistic and catchy/listenable, it might be the best example of that, ever. Here, Lamar has leaned a bit more towards the former and he still shines despite the album as a whole not being quite as re-playable with a distinct lack of what one would call singles. At times it is downright challenging to listen to but that seems like a clear objective with songs like 'We Cry Together' and many other tracks bringing up some seriously heavy subjects. As usual, Kendrick can approach those subjects directly, with grace, and it feels like an open discussion at times of psychological issues and political topics that you inevitably have to deal with in life. Kendrick has dominated the last decade of music, and it really isn't that close.

4.0 excellent | imyourzer0 | July 1st 22 | Some of the absolute highest highs of any of Kenny's work, but also a lot of tracks that I'm not too fond of. I love the flow of the album, and I think it has such highs for me since a lot of it embodies the deeply personal and sensitive side of Kendrick that was shown on "u". Concept and vision is also phenomenal, but that's what you get with Kendrick anything post-Section.80, (excluding untitled unmastered.) even if doesn't seem as focused as previous works. Father Time, We Cry Together, Crown, Mother I Sober, and The Heart Part 5 are some all time Kendrick tracks.

0.0 | pizzamachine | May 25th 22 | "Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a
Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the
midichlorians to create life? He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about
from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so
powerful the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he
taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from
death, but not himself."

3.5 great | Erwann S. STAFF | May 18th 22 | Kinda frustrating tbh: there are some absolutely beautiful songs, but most of the tracks here are "great-but-not-waw", mostly due to the gap existing between Kenny's sharp lyricism and the relative unbombastic nature of the beats - gotta say the production and mixing are pristine though. Still, I think Mr. Morale will age well, because its musical characteristics aren't enshrined in today's musical zeitgeist. That's, ultimately, its greatest weakness AND greatest force.

incredible. Mother I sober
