With 17 years to enhance the final product, Gospel have really made this one count. Seems
marginally more accessible than the debut, but in doing so doesn't sacrifice any of the
energy, especially vocally. Needs time for me, though, but with two listens under my belt
already it's in my top 2 this year. Great album, excited to see how it grows on me

it's a small but significant westward shift on the King Crimson--Hot Cross spectrum in
comparison to The Moon Is a Dead World, and how you feel about that statement is how you'll
feel about this album

A shadow of what they once were. An amateurish pastiche of prog rock and post-hardcore
cliches. Here, Gospel sounds more like a hardcore band with a prog gimmick than the highly
adventurous screamo band they once were.
Typical comeback album, let me 1.5

More thoughtful and cohesive than their seminal
debut, The Loser is an emotionally
bracing set of songs that color Gospel's
songwriting with a newfound desperation and
grubby humanity. More than anything, it sounds
like an absolutely necessary release, and is a
timely reminder that our heroes bleed just like
the rest of us.

After a just over 17 year hiatus from making music, one of the most explosive and energetic screamo and post-hardcore bands is back with their sophomore record and although I might not be crazy about it, I see where the hype is coming from. Heartbreaking and energetic vocals, loud and abrasive guitars and drums, and that droning and religious piano/guitar work that is laced within each track. This album really does make screamo music feel like a religious experience. For me, though the album does come off a bit flat and one-dimensional which doesn?t help my listening experience much at all, I still find the album enjoyable as a whole.

Goofier (bc proggier and dem synths being more prominent in the mix) than TMIADW, The Loser loses some of its emotional impact because it (?)deliberately(?) chooses to not go to the same level of batshit craziness as Moon. Still, I get a fucking kick out of The Loser, and that's all I wanted - I can't ask a band to surpass a top 3 GOAT album.

The Moon is a Dead World was almost immediately mythologized by Gospel breaking up so soon after it was released. It was unfortunate, but preserved their and the album?s legacy in post-hardcore lore. I was pretty nervous about the new album, but it?s exceeded all my expectations. It?s not just the fact they were able to pick up right where the last album left off, but they were able to push their sound forward meaningfully and somehow captured lightning in a bottle twice. It?s certainly more prog-leaning, but doesn?t lose any of that viscerality that keeps the music from running too far off the edge.
