Truly packed with great ideas and intense moments, as well as powerful vocal performance and lyrics, but heavily bogged down by the milquetoast song-writing and production. I don't mind long albums, but the songs here are mostly unnecessarily long. They are built often in an annoyingly similar way and not always use their length wisely. So it ends up being exhausting not even halfway through and a chore to finish.

BRUH THIS ALBUM IS A MOVIE. I literally don?t want to do a soundoff or review about it and I wouldn?t even recommend you read one, this album could literally be spoiled. Just LISTEN to this album and consume reviews afterward. I?m gonna relisten to this album and 5 it in like a month. 2022 is the best year for music in AGES.

The best bits lean into her struggles with religion, the rest feels like a facsimile of a facsimile of a facsimile. The songs are underdeveloped.

Ethel Cain delivers a debut that is haunting, gorgeous and jaw dropping. Her excellent, narratively driven songwriting and ethereal sound is so intimate in detail of her experiences on each track. It is hard (yet rewarding) not to feel transported into the American Gothic setting she is clearly inspired by; from her album cover to the range of genres she implements are fantastic. A must hear of 2022.

?Preacher?s Daughter? is an enthralling listen, immersing the listener in a terrifying American Gothic atmosphere with elements of alternative folk, dream pop, and Americana. From its chilling opening moments detailing religious trauma to the harrowing depictions of abuse and grief in ?Thoroughfare? to the beautifully tragic and haunting description of death that is ?Ptolemaea? and its subsequent two instrumental pieces, to the album?s breathtaking ending, the album is an masterpiece and one of the most raw artistic outlets of catharsis for an artists? own personal trauma ever. This album wrecked me.

i'll be honest, if i didn't see a lot of hype around this album which summarized its storyline, i don't think i would have gotten it through just reading the lyrics. there are also many songs which, knowing it's a story album, seem to repeat the same beat. that being said, i love ethel cain, and i didn't mind two songs having similar theming if it meant i got more of her music.rfave song-- strangers

When Ethel Cain's powerful lyrics are carried by engaging songwriting ("American Teenager", "Family Tree", "Gibson Girl"), Preacher's Daughter attains a pop perfection level that's as gripping as it is rewarding. However, the songs' progression is often way too monotonous to leverage its lyrical heaviness. 2.9 Edit: I'm a dumbass, the fourth listen was the right one!!! 3.6
