I got hoodwinked into listening to a Bro-Core album.

As straight-forward and unyieldingly consistent this is I'm quite impressed. Mid year metal stocking filler for sure.

After hearing Malicious Intent and especially Life Sentence I thought to myself, my god, this album slaps. The speed was way higher than expected and I had good fun with this bro-core style of writing. But then came pregnant with meaning midtempo garbage like On Broken Glass and Still Waters Run Deep which sounded like the worst Avenged Sevenfold-songs ever made, so they lost me right there. Higher Place then felt completely out of place - putting a Disturbed-ballad on a record might work for Disturbed, but not for self-declared roughnecks and whiskey-blasting pussy destroyers Malevolence. Neither Matt (Honeycott nor Heafy) could safe this mess. Sad one, the album had promise.

malevolence embody most of the goods and bads of modern metalcore, meaning they use some nice meaty riffs but then ruin most songs with poorly-performed and contextually ill-fitting clean vocals.

Some real grooves on this one, growled and aggressive vocals even when they're cleans. Lots of
nods towards early 90's thrash, and boatloads of adrenaline. the audible equivalent of red-bull
at it's best.. One pretty, post-grungy ballad in the middle, and a few odd features (Matt Heafy??)
add some jank to the overall flow, though.
