If you are into remotely extreme metal, this is the album for you. Death, black, prog, melodic, power, and a bit of folk - it's all here in wonderfully consistent quality. Famous for a good reason.

The progressive elongation and complexity for each subsequent track on this terrific debut completely defines the meaning of build up; and the pay-off is sheer bliss. What gives this album an even bigger boost is its blend of multiple genres without feeling inconsistent or indecisive. And, as a result of its hybrid take, the music remains quite unpredictable as the structures become increasingly elaborate with great technicality and passion to boot. Without a doubt, Wintersun brings with it the type of sound and style that's been attributed to works such as the original "Big Three" of melodic death metal, except one could debate it as even better than any of those.

Ahhh so when you said just a Norther rip-off with Folk elements and I said explain, that's what you meant, I got it now.
Nah I'm just giving you a hard time man the past is the past. This is my favorite album of all time, I have never heard a more perfect combination of sounds. Each song brings completely different elements to the table while throughout the entire album the epicness just does not let up. This album really takes you away from reality and into some dream world, pure genius.

This album had every preposition to totally fail for me personally, but it did anything but. Overly epic Power Metal, synth orchestras, choral vocals and hyper-melodic folk. All traits likely to totally turn me off an album. However with amazing songwriting, neoclassical shred mastery and very nice heavy blackened features, the album manages to win me over. The songs are beautifully structured without being too conplex, and the blackened riffing sits although way too epic overall for me. Don?t even have to mention the absolutely class shredwork with crazy arpeggios etc. flying around effortlessly. Good job Jari.

Jari bringing the chops. Solid, fool-proof, staple sounds for a melodic death/folk metal sound with some really nice creativity and unique elements thrown in the mix (i.e. "Death and the Healing" solo).

Fantastic metal record, combining elements of many sub-genres into one cohesive listen. Some of the tracks are overlong and a little more variation among them would be welcome, but the whole thing is so well-performed and produced that it scarcely matters. "Death and the Healing" has one of my favourite guitar solos ever.

Wintersun's debut album has already been classic, mostly because of its epicness combining power, melodic death, black, progressive and folk metal.....My favorite song here is by far "Death and the healing"...Also i love the epic "Starchild"(another masterpiece), "Sadness and hate" (Epic horus with the clean vocals) and "Battle against time"....

Wintersun's self titled album combines power and death metal to make a pretty balanced and consistent record. Unfortunately, it falls to blandness and superfluous repetition in many spots and what's being repeated isn't always that interesting. That said, the drum work is spectacular and the guitar work isn't half bad either. Definitely not a classic, but intriguing and mostly original. If the songs didn't drag as much, this could be 4.

Can't figure out why it took me so long to check this band out. This was a pretty refreshing find in the metal realm, so I'd recommend this to most metal fans. With the inclusion of melodic, folk, and power metal influences, there almost is something for every metal fan. This was a solid release, though a few scattered moments kept this from being a 4.5 or even a classic. There is so much potential here though, so I'm axiously anticipating their next offering.

Metal has now defersified to a point when it is nearly pointless to talk about genres or genre classification. Take Wintersun for instance. Playing a supremely techinical combination of power, death, black, and thrash metal, Wintersun's epic self-titled debut is one of the best albums of the past few years. The songs here are usually very catchy, without substituting any of the brutalness found throughout. All and all, Wintersun has made a great album, and one that is a necessary pick up for any metal fan.

While a little-known two-man act may been seen as monopolized by garage rock bands and kvlt black metal bands, the essence of extreme metal seems to be captured intelligently by any number of people anymore. Finland's Wintersun has succeeded in creating their own unique style while retaining influences from past projects and experiments. After departing from folk metal band Ensiferum, Jari Maenpaa combined folk/viking themes with an affinity for guitar-driven power melodic death metal. The Scandinavian feel combined with the heavy use of synth atmosphere creates an incredibly epic production while Jari's instrumental virtuosity is bound to inspire legions of aspiring metal shredders. Wintersun's debut is an incredibly impressive display of musical and songwriting talent, full of catchy melodies, multiple vocal performances, fast, riveting metal passages, and an overall powerful arrangement of unique extreme metal that no metal fan should pass up.
