Between being a full-fledged wizard (no, not the type of wizard who attends Hogwarts) and appearing in various Disney Channel movies that are real forgettable, Selena Gomez admittedly had her work cut out for her. However, looking back at Kiss and Tell - the debut studio album by Selena Gomez and the Scene (essentially a backing band conceived in order to make Selena look vital) - might make you believe otherwise. It's not an entirely atrocious record per se, seeing how this girl knows how to wish for catchy tunes at the drop of a hat, but "catchy" in Alex Ru--- I mean, Selena's case would be infectious tracks which hardly do a whole lot to distinguish themselves from one another. On top of this, a majority of the songs are pretty vapid. It's appropriate because look at Kiss and Tell's cover art; by the way, I sure hope this had some self-awareness on her part.

Formulaic: yes, but why the hell in the '10s are we slamming an album like this for it? The formula wore out in the 80s and 90s, and that hasn't stopped them from being good albums. This album is just catchy fun pop rock. If you want something different, don't listen. If you want a fun listen, knock yourself out with this.

Selena has the talent to make a great album. I honstly thought she got into a genre that is very cliche for someone coming out of Disney, therefor making the album not seem interesting. Her next album is said to be slower and less pop-like. If this is the case, her next album will be much better. I don't like the fact that people are really slamming her for this album. She does'nt really have much experience when it comes to music, so cut her some slack. My recomendation to make a better album is to try multiple genres, because when it comes to pop nowadays, it is hard to stick out and be unique. In addition, you'll find what genre your talents stand out in. I have high hopes that Selena's next album will be an improvement.

Sonically the tracks sound very similar to each other save for "The Way I Love You" and "I Got You". The Scene does show signs of being a decent power pop band but rarely do they deviate from the formula used to create the songs. No big surprise that the lyrics are cliche there are some catchy tunes like "Crush" and "Kiss and Tell". Selena Gomez suffers from trying to portray a tough attitude like P!NK or Arvil and sings in a monotone voice making the songs uninteresting, forced, and boring. . .Hilary Duff anyone? This creates a feeling of her acting instead of being "real", but with refinement and a clear direction Selena Gomez and The Scene could be main contenders to success among the current wave of Disney actors/singers but for now they stand below the bar.
