Not gonna lie, it's hella impressive that after 30 years, these Swedes can still make a hour-plus long album feel like half that length considering the style of music they play. The highs are HIGH and the lows are barely even blips on the radar. Their best in a hot minute.

Well, this was a Meshuggah album for sure, but to be honest: Milo's review is far more enjoyable than the album itself. Not bad, but I doubt if I ever want to give this a re-listen. Minus points for the disastrous album cover.

I'm confused after this. It's so similar, too similar, to The Violent Sleep of Reason and don't
add any 3S' SUPER/STUNNING/SPECTACULAR guitar work or the way of it's work, but it's still
satisfying and Broken Cog, They Move Belowe are different from chugging brew play style. In my
opinion The Violent Sleep of Reason was/is better.

They're mostly playing within the established
formula, playing it safe yet
occasionally pushing the needle
with a slight tinker to the mathematical
equation.
There are a
handful of winning tracks that I will listen to in
isolation but as an album it's grimly
monotonous. The same guitar ambience rising and
falling over
shifting tectonic plates of rhythm. The
unrelenting, flatlined heaviness. Frederik
Thordendal's trademark post modern
guitar solos, inharmonic and arrhythmic as always.
Jens Kidman replicating his last
performance, the one before that, and before that.
What's worse than the numbing
familiarity is
the sound has taken a nose dive. It's all attack
and very rigid and
characterless.

Since Obzen, all of their songs have sounded the same. It makes it really hard to play attention to each song of the new album, because it's cookie-cutter Meshuggah. Bleed is practically the only song of Meshuggah's on my playlist, because it's all you need.

Another solid Meshuggah - who's surprised? They've got that groove going, and also some of their softest material yet - but the bangers do bang ("The Faultless" m/). 66 mins is too long tho.
