Gothic-er than ever, Skinny Fia sees Fontaines D.C. balancing the youthful punker vibe of their debut and their sophomore's gloom. It's not as banging as Dogrel, but they show how mature they now are as a band. They show more depth than on A Hero's Death, yet I still fail to be fully convinced - some tunes overstay their welcome by offering no proper conclusion to their premises ("The Couple", "Bloomsday"). Their heart is way too fucking big not to fall in love with this nonetheless.

Fontaines D.C. continue to be super solid post-punk but haven't quite topped or reached the heights of 'Dogrel' again. Skinty Fia once again feels just a bit subdued, which is fine, but it felt like Fontaines were at their best when they injected a bit more life and energy into the tunes. Sonically the album is very pleasing with a great mix and production in general. 'Jackie Down the Line', 'Roman Holiday' and 'I Love You' stand out.

The 3.5est band working today make an even more conceptual, musically stubborn record. Their song-writing philosophy of building up tension and forcing release through power is often quite moving, but can also drag the songs out unnecessarily.

Not really sure what I was thinking with reviewing this album. It comes from two genres of music I have never loved; post-punk and gothic rock. Don?t get me wrong the style and sound are all very solid and if you love those styles you will love this. It?s a harrowing and dark album that feels very classic. But not for me do what can you do.
