Dark Angel, or more affectionately known as DARK FUCKIN' ANGEL, put out this masterful display of thrashing madness in 1986 and absolutely NOTHING has lived up to it's standard since. That's right. Nothing since 1986 has been able to hang with Darkness Descends. The production fits the album perfectly. Modern production wouldn't do this album justice, it needs the raw unpolished feel of the 80s thrash production. Don Doty's vocal performance here is the best in thrash metal. That's all there is to it. His scream in Darkness Descends, his falsetto in Merciless Death, Don Doty is unrivaled. Gene Hoglan bashes his way into our hearts and minds with his stellar performance here, and the guitars tear away at your flesh with ripping fast riffs and solos. This is as good as it gets when you're talking about true thrash metal, you really just don't get any better. The city is guilty, the crime is life, the punishment is death. DARKNESS DESCENDS!!

Of the three infamous members of the 'unholy trio' of 1986, Dark Angel's sophomore effort is the fastest of the bunch and is a prime influence on the extreme metal genres in terms of atmosphere, tempo shifts, bottom heavy production, and blazing speed. "The Burning of Sodom" (my favorite tune here) alone was the fastest song of its time, running at a tempo of 280bpm. The remake of "Merciless Death" turns a terrific song into a career highlight, and "Death Is Certain (Life Is Not)," "Perish In Flames," the title track, and the masterfully eerie "Black Prophecies" are gleaming gems of the genre. Hyperactive thrash metal doesn't get much better than this. A landmark in thrash metal.

Insane, aggressive, fast, absolutely destructive. Thrash at its best. This album tops every other thrash album. Up there with Spectrum of Death, Eternal Nightmare and Epidemic of Violence.

One of the best thrash releases of all time i was strongly considering a 5 given just how intense it is for its time. This is how thrash should be done, fast paced but still with a solid groove to it and one of the most chaotic voaclists of all tiem. "DARKNESSS DESCENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDSSSS"

The secound best dark angel album after Time Does Not Heal. This beats the crap out of slayer. It is extremely hard to find on cd, but definitely worth the purchase. The burning of sodom is played at 280bpm!!!! Only sadus or wehrmacht can beat that speed.

Lead heavy, fast and brutal for the time. Nothing more than a generic thrash record today. Gene Hoglan's speed, again, for the time was amazing, and the riffs aren't horrible. I'll give it a 3.

This is not as annoying as its predecessor as the vocals have massively improved and are only occasionally ridiculous, but it is just thoroughly boring. Prod seemed a bit weird. The good riffs are very scarce, and instead are drowned in a sea of a lot of notes played very fast. Apart from the sweet bass intro on 4, this was just mindnumbing rapidy rapidy thrash that I won't come back to. 2.0

It took a while, but this album eventually grew on me. It's angry, evil, and brutal as all fucking hell, it's the L.A. caffeine machine's most menacing album, it's Darkness Descends! A couple songs could use some improvement (Hunger of the Undead isn't very memorable, and Black Prophecies is a little too long), but for the most part this is solid and fucking EVIL thrash metal.

The fastest album of its day and also one of the most memorable. the vocals are absolutely chaotic, Gene Hoglan is a monster behind his drum kit and THAT riff that opens up the title track always stands out as one of the best out there. Front to back this is a masterpiece but if you want somewhere to start go for the title track with its infectious chorus and incredible intro. This is an album that never lets up in speed and heaviness.
