2.2 poor | Erwann S. STAFF | October 28th 22 | Will Bevan continues on his beatless journey, and it's not with Antidawn he's gonna convince me. The record could be summed up as "vinyl cracking + voice appearing for 5 seconds + strings heard and reheard", all happening randomly, without narration or construction helping the lack of rhythm to leverage something out of this shapeless suite of sounds.

4.0 excellent | Bedex | February 26th 22 | I think norma hite the nail quite right on this one with his rev. This is Burial succeeding a lot more consistently than it previously has at making a fully beatless record that is more than 15min long. Although this is ambient there is a whole lot going on, with lots of sounds, textures, fx and sample collages coming in an out very frequently. In that sense, it reminded me of a Tim Hecker i.e. ambient that shifts, moves and evolves, as opposed to a synthpad monoblock - a major difference with Hecker being the high prevalence of (Burial processed) vocals here, which makes Antidawn almost feel like the beatless, desperate flipside of Untrue. Can't help thinking of spending a depressed amount of time alone in your room late at night during the London lockdowns when jamming this. The vibe varies subtly, with 4 being more hopeful and 5 being more scared almost, but every track is equally good aside from 3 which I did find a bit subpar. Might have been just in the right mood for this but this felt like very strong output from B. 3.9

3.0 good | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | January 19th 22 | Field recording-infused minimalist mini-album that often sounds like it's saying more than it actually does. Burial's progression into maximally abstract artist, what with his ambient experiments and all, starts to shine brighter and brighter. 'ANTIDAWN' nevertheless has some issues, above all its pace that often comes across as a loose Youtube playlist with sparse flow, peculiar rhythm logic, and often questionable sample choices that can throw one out of the listening process.

2.0 poor | ajcollins15 | January 12th 22 | Burial is one of the most influential and important artists in modern electronics and almost all of his material up to the last few years is considered (and rightfully so) a classic. On his newest EP we see a brand new direction, ditching his future garage and dubstep upbringing for a much more somber, simple, and light/bright sound. However, this EP/LP doesn?t hit all that hard and to be honest, gets lost in its own sound for most of it. Nothing comes together all that well and everything feels like a mess when it?s all said and done. Don?t get me wrong there is something here and I know he can work through this blunder, but for now, he continues to relish in his own past.
