0.0 | fromtheinside | September 20th 09 | "Did you like Attack Attack!?"
No.
"Well I promise this sounds nothing like it, it's kind of like a mix between what they should have sounded like and Underoath!"
hmmmm, seems interesting.
"Just listen to the first song and i bet you'll be able to weigh your opinion."
seems fair...
The entire genre bands like this are trying to create is wearing thin already, and its sadly only been around for months. Whether this will embark on the same trials of Crabcore that their peers invested in is yet to be seen. What I can say is that anyone who is tricked into listening to this should rethink their inner circle of friends. Everything about Asking Alexandria's debut is the reason why people are not only scoffing at the metalcore scene, but the entire makeshift that's become rock music. Granted these bands are trying to become something distinguishable, but what doesn't help is that they're terrible.

1.0 awful | Pr0phet | July 23rd 10 | I decided to pick up this album on a friend's suggestion.
The next day, I shattered it with a meat cleaver.
I first listened to their "best song" called The Final Episode [ Lets Change The Channel ], besides the title being completely unrelated to the song, the lyrics are horrid and repetitive. It begins with "OH MY GOD", which starts it off terribly. The ending was worse. Hearing "You need a doctor baby, you scared". for a full minute hurt my ears.
The guitar is extremely annoying. The drums sound the same throughout every song. The vocals are disgusting. I could barely understand what they were barking and screeching into the microphone. Their songs were only the second time I had to look at lyrics to even halfway understand what they were attempting to sing. At some points, it sound like the lead singer said " I want a brownie".
What was really funny, like I mentioned before, the titles have NO relation to the song whatever, showing that they have no creativity whatsoever.
For example:
Title: If You Can't Ride Two Horses At Once... You Should Get Out Of The Circus
Some lyrics:
So now this is over and the world falls upon me,
I never expected to be here alone.
The shadows are forming as we burst into flames.
Why does this end this way?
The lyrics are only about crying and how they were left alone, which is typical emo shit. Just a typical scene kid band with only half the shitty appearance. The lyrics make Black Veil Brides look like Billy Joel. The song titles make BrokenCYDE look like Daft Punk. The guitars make the average man look like Slash.
The album and the band suck.

1.5 very poor | ABRWolfFang79 | September 5th 11 | I agree with this completely I don't see what sort of talent they have can someone please take away their guitars all they do is play multiple-open stringed breakdowns as you said and whenever they got something good going for them like synth chorus section in a A prophecy they ruin it with another boring breakdown yet the scene kids will love this.

1.0 awful | DivinityOfPan | February 17th 10 | How paradoxical is it that we, as a race have been able to place the worst of both worlds (in this case, trance and metalcore) adjacent to one another and still become successful? Sure, if one were to really tweak all the small (or in this case large) elements of said juxtaposition, then perhaps one could perfect it. For now, we have asking Alexandria. Generic, slow breakdowns play a key component to the supposed "heavy music" that Asking Alexandria produce. These breakdowns make up a dumfounding majority of this album. The minority are terribly awkward and cheesy trance bits (auto-tuned vocals and programmed instruments only amaze the listener more so than he already is) and lyrics that reference gore ad nauseum. The cliche, cheesy way this is all done makes this album overtly repetitive. Subsequently, this band has created one of the most painful releases of the decade, leading one to believe that Asking Alexandria had a rather odd way of perceiving the concept of "aural assault."

5.0 classic | GetOnYourKnees | January 15th 10 | Asking Alexandria is a suberb band hailing from Mother England and is a brilliant mixture of Metalcore, Trance and dabs of Deathcore.
The vocals in this band is AMAZING. The clean vocals could be better but they are still a highlight of the band. The screaming is excellent. From the high screams of Deathcore/Black Metal and the Guttural Growls from Death Metal. The vocals are well-ranged and fit in perfectly. Sometimes they use one word screaming/singing (One word screaming, next word singing) Which is very good.
The drums are another highlight AA. They are fast usually and go well with the guitar. The drummer is talented and is a important member of the band.
The guitars are catchy and usually distorted. They are not a highlight of the band, but goes well with the drums.
Synth.. i'm not usually a fan of, but AA usually use them well and not over the top.
The breakdowns are excellent, not cheesy.
Clean Vocals - 7.5/10 (Catchy but sometimes used out of place)
Harsh Vocals - 9.5-10 (Great range and guttural)
Guitars - 7 (Nothing special but fit in well with the drums)
Drums - 8 (Fast paced and technical)
Synths - 7 (Their average but not used over the top)

0.0 | bloc | September 9th 09 | This band is nothing more than a carbon copy of everyone's favourite band Attack Attack; the actual instruments (ie. guitar, bass, and drums) are trapped in the breakdown hole. In other words, each song consists of only open chord chugging, a few common drop-C chord progressions for the singing, and perhaps a dash of tremolo picking. Then we got that lovely studio magic along with the secret weapon, the synthesizer. This does not reap any benefits for the band, as everything they do has already been done. The wet synth lines come off as almost annoying just like in other similar bands. If you can find a connection with bands like this, this is definitely one to add to the books. Otherwise, avoid.

1.0 awful | Hanusko | June 30th 16 | There you have it, the starter pack for scene kids of 21st century. Asking Alexandria always was and always will be a whinny, girlish, tasteles and generic metalcore, that somehow got to the mainstrean, just bc.12 year old girls are angsty and emotional. Even if I've tried, I wouldn't find any qualities of the band, the vocalist is awfully bad, guitar players don't have any imagination and they are putting out some of the cringiest riffs I've ever heard. Structurully this band is closest to early 00s boy bands. Yeah so this band isn't good
Bump |
3.0 good | MaggieG | February 19th 16 | One of the most wasteful and juvenile records to stain the metalcore genre and a love letter to hormonal scene kids. If the cliche juvenile lyrics don't rub you off, then the out of place and ear bleeding electronic breakdowns and Danny Worsnop's whiny petulant vocals will be enough to make you press the stop button.
Bump |
3.0 good | Brumas | January 28th 16 | If this album were to condense all the good songs (Final Episode, Prophecy, etc.) into an ep, this would actually be pretty good minus the shitty electronic elements. They had some decent energy at their "heaviest" moments. As someone who liked this band back in 2009 when me and a bunch of friends were listening to all the bands of this style and then later LOATHING it, I can look back and acknowledge that it isn't as garbage as it looks from a distance.

3.0 good | Alabaster Jones | May 22nd 15 | The infamous British quintet of Asking Alexandria has received a lot of flak from critics over the years. I understand why they'd get criticism, but the amount of vitriol and hate directed towards this band, and especially this album, just seems out of place and forced. The reason for that is the band doesn't do anything criminally wrong here, and while the music is indeed homogenic, it's not like it's any more so than most of their contemporaries. So why they became the band to detest, I don't know. It's not original in any way, but it is very catchy and thus pretty fun. And yes, the music is kind of dumb, as it is essentially just Emmure with some actual guitar leads here and there and some ridiculously catchy and fun choruses, but in this case it doesn't have to be smart. All they've done here is make an album to mindlessly mosh to while having a sing-along in between. And in that sense, the album succeeds.

2.5 average | mcg182 | May 9th 13 | With as much hype, as many fangirls fauning over them, and as much people like them, AA's magnum opus is surprisingly meh. I saw them live, and it really says something when for every song, the lead singer asked the audience to sing a majority of the lyrics "FOR them" (his words), he can barely hit the notes he does sing, he stops mid-performance to chug a can of monster and beam it into the audience, and people who were enjoying the show until their act began started leaving two freaking songs in.

0.0 | | January 18th 12 | Hailing from Yorkshire, England. Asking Alexandria has not only helped to butcher the already waning reputation of the metalcore genre, but has also created an abomination, complete with repetitive chugging, unwanted synthesizer placement, and an ongoing onslaught of breakdowns, all on paper thin guitars that sound like they could be snapped like a twig, however, both the clean and harsh vocals are excellent for the genre, unfortunately, that wasn't enough to save this album from being a chore to listen to.

1.5 very poor | InFiction | January 17th 12 | Generic, in every sense of the word. This is basically your cookie-cutter Synth/Metalcore band with nothing going for them. I know that sounds harsh, but it's accurate; the record is actually much worse than I had expected it to be. The only tolerable track is 'Final Episode (Let's Change The Channel)' but that is drastically brought down by generic lyrics, generic instrumentation and a disjointed song structure, making it feel like 3 separate segments as opposed to a whole. Terrible.

0.0 | Passname | April 1st 11 | I don't care what you say. This is the best record of the decade hands down. No question. Come on, it's Asking Alexandria! Anyway, on a less condescending note, whenever I ponder what 'perfection' really is, I turn to "Stand Up and Scream". Asking Alexandria's magnum opus, and the best metal record of the decade, lacks any bad moment or slip up. It begins with the malicious "Alerion", which transcends into the best song of the decade, the orgasmic ""Final Episode (Let's Change the Channel". Every song is a highlight. Yes. Every song. I could ramble on about the vocal melodies in "A Candlelit Dinner with Inamorta", or the monstrous intro to "Nobody Don't Dance No More", the pure evil of "Hey There Mr. Brooks" or the beauty captivated in less than two minutes in "Hiatus". Need more? How about the soothing "If You Can't Ride Two Horses at Once... You Should Get Out of the Circus", or the magic in "A Single Moment of Sincerity"? Everything is perfect here. This is the best progressive metal album ever made, and is Asking Alexandria's 'tour de force' if you will. No progressive band will ever top this, and AA will probably never even come close to it again. The next time somebody asks you how to exemplify 'perfection'; use "Stand Up and Scream" as an example. It's pure genius.

4.0 excellent | jamesiscake | September 16th 09 | Asking Alexandria is definitely worth a listen. Vocalist Danny Worsnop has very good screaming and clean vocals, the guitarists and bassist are very proficient and play great melodies and riffs. The drums are very well played as well as the synth, which is used just enough to be awesome and not annoying or gimmick-ey. Stand Up and Scream is a very well made CD with a lot of talent behind it. This band is going places, deal with it.
