Proggy folky melodeath with solemn clean vocals: ain't my shit but there are a couple of interesting moments - eg the Oriental bit on "On the Dark Waters" - and enough stylistic shifts within a coherent framework for this to be pleasant.

Judging this album is not an easy task. On the one hand, you can blame Amorphis for sticking too close to their familiar sound or being too consistent for their own sake. On the other hand, Halo is a damn fine album, full of beautiful moments which is based on a sound no other band has managed to imitate. So, all in all, this is still a triumph imo, especially considering that it's the 14th release of the Finnish melodeath masters. At some point, we might realize that we've been taking greatness for granted for too long.

As much as I'm against calling out early album of the year candidates this early, Halo sets the bar high. I'm going to sit here and enjoy the hype.

I've always considered Amorphis a highly important band for
melodeath, they keep the torch burning brighter than ever here. Halo
is a smooth listen for the most part, but make no mistake. There are
glittering moments of orchestral, synth, and prog rock beauty here
alongside FAIRLY creative grooves and gallops when necessary.

This is Amorphis as lukewarm as it gets. All the signatures are there but somehow milder. The whole thing's diluted and softened. Even the energetic melodic moments which should hook, don't. There's not a single stroke of brilliance, not a single surprise, not a single stand out track. I guess that I got used to the formula. The template, which was set on "Eclipse" and developed to perfection on "Under the Red Cloud" got spread too thin. Time to expand the template or change it altogether, which of all bands Amorphis can do well. Maybe it's time to incorporate some death metal again? That would be nice.
