Everyone was waiting for Lil Ugly Mane to release a new hip hop album but instead he released PET SOUNDS VOLUME II. And it was glorious.

This album did a really good job of keeping it's structures out of my mind while actually staying buried in my subconscious. Like it's the album that's easy to forget about, then I put it on, I'm like "oh yeah! I love this." A lot of that has to do with the mood being working through depression - a lot of this loosely feels like an unreleased 90s Beck album if he needed to work through a harsh break-up - but a lot of it is because of how the songs are built-up; There's a really clever sense of establishing inter-knit dynamics and functioning nuances using a quirky range of samples. Instrumentation sounds refined, yet purposely unrefined at the same time; The out-of-tune guitar actually emphasizes the lyrical theme of "Cursor" really effectively, like just running with a sense of satisfaction that won't resonate well. "VPN" establishes a dark headspace in really beautifully compiled sonic layers that itself feels like a triumph, a monument to stand above it's roots. "Styrofoam" encapsulates a mentality of living outside the present (emphasized by sounding like an old-timey cartoon playing off a TV) and how investing in the moment requires an actual long-term investment. The majority of the tracks make good points about the true nature of love, and with a keen sense of sonic layering in a clearly defined, yet hard to pigeonhole, thematic outline, this album cements itself as an essential release to anyone willing to let it sink in, and to underground music, in general.

2021. Structurally, nothing else from Lil Ugly Mane's discography or 2021 holds a candle to this album's assembly. The way each of these songs is designed puts everything in the right place to create the perfect tone. If Lil Ugly Mane was trying to convince you of something with his albums before this one, here he's finally showing you. And he finally gets to chill with the geniuses of this era.

The sampling on the tracks are insane and super original, like their nothing sounding quite like it. I havent listen to any album from 2021, lets be clear here, but this album is the best yet and theres some classic song on here too. 4,2/5

Don?t get me wrong, this is a really solid release from the Virginia producer and rapper. But this album is pretty much a mess of a listen, and I understand that?s the point, but when half the songs feel like filler, I will take an issue. There are some truly solid Songs on here with brilliant plunderphonic elements and others that are neo-psychedelic bangers. So overall this is a great album but man half these songs just feel so unnecessary.

the 1965 movie Fun In Balloon Land meets Caretaker's 3rd stage of Everywhere At The End of Time at a local park and buys cotton candy. One tastes like strawberry and the other like gasoline. Someone is playing Black Moth Super Rainbow in the distance. You wake up from the bed in a single flat on 6th floor of the bulding yet you immediately feel that a car will drive you over if you do not get up.
