I have a soft spot for these guys which must make me old?! Its an enjoyable album but very much the same as before as Scott mentioned.
Very good review!

Insisting that there must be a distinct resemblance between a new album and a band's earlier works in order for the new album to be considered a quality release is, in my experience is the quickest path to disappointment with any new album. Bands change line-ups, producers, labels and, frankly, get older, and their sound changes. To say that this album doesn't match Collective Soul (1995) in terms of quality and originality is stating the obvious, but how many bands release an album 15 years later that lives up to the album that made them famous? Especially bands with their origins in the '90s. Rabbit sounds like classic Collective Soul to me, and easily surpasses Afterwords in terms of energy and songwriting. "Understanding" is "legitimately awful?" Seriously? It sounds like a band having fun to me! The first time I heard it, and many times since, it unwittingly brought a smile to my face. "Hymn For My Father" is beautiful. "Dig" is electrifying. Ed Roland and company continue to impress. And by the way, I loved Blender.

Collective Soul return with the style that drew me in 14 years ago. Big bold melodies and driving, hooky guitar riffs. Ed Roland is a deft songwriter, and 'Rabbit' displays this talent nicely. These guys are sadly underrated and overlooked, and often fall into obscurity when pitted among the "dislikes" of other shit bands around today. Collective Soul, even at their weakest, are infinitely better than anything any NickelHinderCobraback could dream of offering. There is a reason why Collective Soul is still around and for their lasting appeal. Buy it, give it a real chance, turn the volume up and enjoy some real music.
