On the band's fifth album, the progressive outfit looks to space ambient and rock for inspiration. Not only does it not pay off most of the time. This album is plagued with feeling unfinished and borderline uninspired. Don?t get me wrong it?s not a bad album to listen to but with half the album being interludes and half of the non-interlude tracks being boring instrumental cuts this album leaves a lot to be desired. Still, it?s fine when it?s on, but can?t be a bit tiring after a while.

Okay, hear me out. This is like the aural equivalent of a SleepNumber® pillow. A comfortable place to lay your head for sure, but wholly inoffensive in conforming to the space around you. It's there, basically. I'm glad Cynic had another go, but it's a little like coloring in the lines, and then erasing the lines afterward. I'm just saying, more often than not it's like Masvidal is afraid to actually play riffs on his guitar and just when it feels like it's getting there it pulls back.

From the get go and the album intro on 1+2 I really like the extremely synthy, airy style of prog this offers, which reminds me a bit of The Contortionist's Intrinsic in that I quite enjoy it yet it isn't too well received. The album is largely instrumental, and it's a good thing because even for Cynic here the vocals are really stretching it. On previous albums, they were an acquired taste; here they just feel half assed. This is very clear on 6 or 13. The album is quite nicely continuous in spite of all the interludes, which contributed to my enjoyment of it at the start, but also made it feel getting very long after a while. By 15 I really needed it to be done, and although there's not much after that it also felt like quite the stretch. Really like the style of is, not quite its execution, but when feeling free to cut it short this is a good album to jam for sure. 3.5

s y n t h s. Truly, The Ascension Codes pace is rhythmed by its synths interludes introducing/concluding the proper tunes - of which the shorter ones are the best ("Aurora", "In A Multiverse Where Atoms Sing").

This almost tops traced in air for me if it wasn't for the lack of bass but the synth gives this a totally different feel, the whole album feels very triumphant and uplifting...like im getting beamed up...I hope Masvidal continues to push the Cynic sound forward.
